Empower your people, your company—and yourself—with leadership egolibrium

egolibrium: the ability to toggle between egocentric and “other-centric” attitudes, values, and behaviors for organizational success

There’s no doubt about it: the very best leaders are deeply in tune with their behavior and understand the impact it has on others. As one of the world’s top trainers in the field of accelerated experiential learning, Ron Roberts understands this more keenly than anyone, and in The Well-Balanced Leader, he helps you re-envision your own behavior to become the best leader you can be.

Roberts makes the process of finding the perfect leadership balance—what he calls egolibrium—personally enriching and easy to achieve. He begins by identifying the nine human behavioral dichotomies that most affect the quality of leadership:

  • Nonjudgmental / Judgmental
  • Nondefensive / Defensive
  • Relinquishing Control / Controlling
  • Openness to learning / Know it all
  • Doing the right thing / Doing whatever you want
  • Patience / Impatience
  • Letting go / Holding on
  • Acceptance / Resistance
  • Other-centric / Egocentric

Everyone’s behaviors fall somewhere between each dichotomy. Using the activities, action steps, games, and thought exercises included for each pair, you’ll figure out exactly where your behaviors land, and then learn how to move that position in one direction or the other to find the right balance or your specific needs. When you transcend your personal needs and focus on the needs of others and of the organization, everyone benefits—including you. The result is not only greater job satisfaction for people at all levels, but greater productivity— regardless of the organization’s field, product, or service.

The Well-Balanced Leader gives you the tools for making the small, incremental changes in behavior that lead to big changes in awareness—and huge changes in your leadership effectiveness.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

In The Well-Balanced Leader, top experiential, accelerated-learning trainer Ron Roberts shows you how to identify your strengths and weaknesses in the nine most critical behavioral areas. He helps you “unstick” yourself from behavioral patterns that damage your influence as a leader, your relationships with those you lead, and the effectiveness of your organization.

The Well-Balanced Leader provides valuable insight into the inner workings of great leadership, along with activities, games, and exercises to determine where you excel—and where you fall short. It empowers you to:

  • Strike a balance among the needs of the people you lead, your own needs, and the needs of the organization
  • Become more conscious of what motivates you, drives your behavior, and determines how you relate to others
  • Think before you speak and respond to every situation with measured behavior

With The Well-Balanced Leader, you’ll learn how to alter your behavior in ways that benefit your people, contribute value to your organization, and launch yourself to the highest level of success.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's All in Your Head, February 10, 2012
This review is from: The Well-Balanced Leader: Interactive Learning Techniques to Help You Master the 9 Simple Behaviors of Outstanding Leadership (Hardcover)
The cover of this amazing new leadership book says it all. Balance, so crucial to success in both life and business, yet so hard to find, eludes even the most conscientious leader. But Ron Roberts' new book may be slightly misplaced on the business bookshelf, because his advice will help ANYONE intent on living a more fulfilling life as well as a more rewarding career. We all lead, whether we like it or not, by setting examples for those around us, both at home and on the job. Wouldn't we all like not only to stand up straight and maintain our balance but also to pick ourselves up and straighten our backs whenever we stumble? This practical guide shows exactly how anyone can do that. I love the book and will keep it on my bedside table.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving Managers to Leaders, February 9, 2012
This review is from: The Well-Balanced Leader: Interactive Learning Techniques to Help You Master the 9 Simple Behaviors of Outstanding Leadership (Hardcover)
If you want to be a better leader, get this book! I knew after reading the introduction and 1st chapter of "The Well-Balanced Leader" that I was going to like this easy-to-understand book and find it highly informative. This is more than just another book on leadership psychology. In this book, Ron Roberts provides a way to assess where one's leadership level is now and how to move it to a higher scale. Key business topics of empowerment, feedback, ethics, motivation, knowledge sharing and continuous learning are presented as great leadership essentials.

The book comes with a mini-assessment and scoring sheet to determine a starting point for leadership measurement. Within each chapter are guiding principles for leadership that are well worth posting in meeting rooms. Plus personalized affirmations are scattered throughout that would make great office bulletin board reminders as a management compass. It also includes games, exercises, and activities to be done individually, in pairs, or with a group in order to help with growth planning, strategy development, and moving forward in the learning process. All chapters include short thought-provoking cases studies or examples and quotes from successful business leaders. I read a lot of business books and this is one book I found full of great material and really hard to put down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great For Managers/Executives of Large Businesses, February 8, 2012
This review is from: The Well-Balanced Leader: Interactive Learning Techniques to Help You Master the 9 Simple Behaviors of Outstanding Leadership (Hardcover)
The author, Ron Roberts, is well qualified to deal with issues of ego and management. With counseling and corporate training experience, he is a unique voice in the management/leadership process. His book is titled "Egolibrium," which he defines as "the ability to toggle effectively between Ego-Centric and Other-Centric attitudes, values, and behaviors for the ultimate long-term strategic success of an organization."

The 9 areas he focuses on are certainly essential to leadership. He has defined his market well and appeals to those who are in management positions with strong ego's to tone it down. Balance is key, and he also preaches being conscious of your own behavior as a manager.

While the information is good, I think it works best for a specific type of manager . . . someone who is a little too ego-driven but still has enough humility to pick up a book like this. It would be immensely helpful for those folks and if you are in charge of corporate middle-management training, get this book for everyone working for you. You and your managers will learn important tips about balancing between ego and others (for instance, acceptance versus resistance). The exercises in each chapter will aid you and help you to implement these behaviors quickly.

If you are looking for a book that offers some very practical advice on building balance in a manager/leader's life, this book has what you are looking for. Be sure and check out the Guiding Principles section in the back for a quick summary of what to expect.
