More About the Author

Friends often ask how I can be writing 'another' book about dogs, but there is so much to say. You never stop learning about dogs, which is why they are so fascinating and why I am so lucky to have had a career that has invovled them for so long.

I try to make sure that everything I write helps to enhance the life of dogs in some way. They are vulnerable, emotional creatures in a cruel world and need our love and protection. Aggressive owners produce aggressive dogs so all techniques are gentle and friendly, espeically for puppies. You don't need to be domineering with dogs to be successful.

I have been lucky enough to spend all of my adult life, and a lot of my childhood, learning from some of the great trainers and behaviourists. My books pass on as much of that knowledge as I am able to give, put together with all the things I have learnt over the years from the dogs themselves.

I hope they help you with your dog, to solve problems, train him or her to have good manners, and to give both of you a better life than before.

For those of you who have cats, there is just one of my books for you too.

Gwen

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good book for new dog owners, January 5, 2005
This review is from: The Well Behaved Dog (Hardcover)
This book is a great place for new or novice dog owners to start. It's easy to read and user-friendly with useful color photos throughout. It offers practical advice that works in the real world. It's also dog-friendly. It encourages readers to better understand their dog, what the dog's needs are, and why their dog behaves the way they do. It encourages gentle, positive training methods that can help produce people-friendly dogs. It touches on care, behavior, training, owner responsibility and more. A very nice little book for a first time dog owner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable, February 19, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Well Behaved Dog (Hardcover)
This book is small, and I only got it at a library for a few cents, but it is very good for training. The only problem is picking a dog, for it only holds around 10 breeds, which is very small for a modern dog book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A reasonable book for beginners ..., March 27, 2002

Yeoh Siok Kee (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Well Behaved Dog (Hardcover)
A well bound book, quality paper, and reasonable fonts ... all contributing to a solid feel ... with quite good picture illustrations ...

It's written very much with the new doggie owner in mind.

The author takes the reader through all the basic issues commonly faced new owners: how to start basic training (sit, heel, stay), how to cope with jumping & barking dogs, dogs who pulling on the leash, or are slightly nervous or overactive, issues of separation anxiety etc.

The author's training methods are operant based (using treats and positive encouragement), no physical punishment, and generally follow the training trend that is increasingly prevalent today.

The book also offers some insight on why dogs behave the way they do, making mention of pack behaviour and basic forms of doggie communication ... But all explanations are fairly basic and general ...

A good book to get with your first dog, but not quite suitable for the experienced dog owner, who would probably already have acquired most of the information provided in the book ...

An average book, reasonably informative, without being outstanding ... closer to 3 1/2 stars rather than 4.
