Editorial Reviews

Sure, Jeremy Davenport is "easy on the eyes," as Cosmo magazine points out, but it s his vibrant trumpet and classic crooning that won over the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Paul McCartney, Sting, and Harry Connick, Jr. Pairing up with fellow prominent New Orleanians Basin Street Records, Davenport is set to win even more hearts of fans with his fourth release, We'll Dance 'Til Dawn.

Jeremy Davenport is no stranger to the jazz world. Raised in St. Louis by a music educator mother, and trombonist father, who performs in the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, his love of the music and performing arts were in his blood. So much so that in the eighth grade his father arranged an auspicious introduction to trumpet idol Wynton Marsalis that would change his life forever. A merit scholar at the prestigious Manhattan School of music, Davenport began private study with Raymond Mase and Wynton Marsalis. He went on to study at the University of New Orleans with the patriarch of the Marsalis family, music educator and jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis.

Davenport was honored to become the youngest performer on four world tours with Harry Connick Jr.'s Big Band, after being introduced to Connick by Ellis. Coming off tour in 1989, he finally settled in New Orleans, and has been a well-respected member of the New Orleans family ever since, including being inducted into the New Orleans Jazz Hall of Fame in 2000.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably 4* for me - so just making that average w/ my vote!, April 14, 2010
This review is from: We'll Dance 'Til Dawn (Audio CD)
We recently saw this trumpet player, singer, & composer in New Orleans live at his lounge in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel - a polished performer, wonderful trumpet player, and a swinging singer w/ a voice more like a Chet Baker (I own & love Baker Sings). On our return we purchased an early Davenport album of mainly standards - his voice was even more like Baker and his singing style seems to have become more self-assured; his trumpet playing is superb!

This led us to purchase the current album under question - contains a mixture of old standards and original compositions that blend in nicely; again, his trumpet is his main strength, and his band swings beautifully. Now this is somewhat of a 'throw back' to another era, but for us (born in that era), we have enjoy both recordings.

Jeremy Davenport is a trumpet player and singer who has his own, popular, lounge at the New Orleans Ritz. This album is a good example of his talents, with several original songs. It's pleasant, especially if you've heard him in person, but a little bland.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Buble Fans, April 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: We'll Dance 'Til Dawn (Audio CD)
After hearing "Almost Never" on the radio a few weeks ago, I thought "I've got to grab that album."
However, after first listen the first thing that came to mind was the word bland. Sure, the trumpet work
by Davenport is great, but I can't help but think how much he sounds like Michael Buble. I'm glad that I only
paid $8 for this album. It's good for two or three tracks but the rest are throw aways.

It's for Buble fans.
