5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent layperson's dog health handbook., November 28, 1998
By
This review is from: The Well Dog Book: The Classic Comprehensive Handbook of Dog Care (Paperback)
I have had this book for several years and have used it many times. McGinnis is well-versed in dog health care and her style makes the subject easy to understand. The book is helpful for dog owners whose pets are at any stage of life. It helps owners diagnose a problem, and tells if the dog needs to immediately be seen by a vet or if it can wait for a short time and if so, what the owner can do in the interim to help their pet. The author encourages dog owners to work with their vet for the benefit of the dog. It is obvious that McGinnis loves dogs and wants to help owners and their dogs, and I am very glad that I found this book when it was first published.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Substance, May 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Well Dog Book: The Classic Comprehensive Handbook of Dog Care (Paperback)
Looking for a reliable and helpful reference in caring for my pets, I have looked at and rejected many, many books published for the general public on dog and cat care. Most of them are so general in approach as to be next to useless.

Dr. McGinnis' "Well Dog Book" and "Well Cat Book" are just fabulous. Every line contains meaty, solid, specific information that lets us do our best for our loving, trusting animals. Dr. McGinnis demonstrates respect not only for animals but for their guardians, too.

I have bought many copies of both books and given them to friends, family, and animal shelters. Now I see these books are out of print... but there is every reason to issue a new printing. If you can find a copy anywhere at almost any price, it's worth it!!

Just an interesting note about this book. I am ordering it for my son who is taking an introductory animal health technology class at the local junior college. It's the required text!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK on dog care, I've used it for over twenty yrs!, January 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Well Dog Book: The Classic Comprehensive Handbook of Dog Care (Paperback)
Terri was my vet in Berkeley area in 1974. Her book has been used since then for Kotty Dotty the Wonder Dog, Daisy the Warbling Wonder (and winner of the Gong Show), Dancer, and now Shayna Dayna. All labs or mixed labs. I used it for bringing Daisy and her sisters into the world and by golly, it was RIGHT ON THE MARK every step of the way. I just kept reading and kept track of what the Kotty already knew, but that saved me a lot of worry. I also have saved myself some vet bills by going to the book. There were times I jumped in the truck when emergencies when Terri's advice said to get going, which always occurred at night or on weekends.

I've got the Well-CAt Book too. I scoop up extra copies of the Well Dog Book at garage sales and give them to friends and familiy members who have animals. I stopped by amazon.com to see if there were any old copies available on order and was extremely happy to see that she has a revised/new edition. Every dog owner should have a copy on hand as a reference. If Terri ever stops in to look at this site, my best to her, haven't seen her in over twenty years. Jim Chess

We own a copy of this book from the 1970's. We bought an updated version because we loved it soooo much and passed a copy on to our daughter. It is a classic!

As a dog owner, I have referred to this book many times over the years. My nephew is getting his first dog so I gave my copy to him and immediately had to purchase a new one for myself. Dr. Mcginnis gives good advice in a simle direct manner. It is a good adjunct to your own veterinarian.
