LOVELY, FULL INTRO TO NOVELLO'S MUSIC, June 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: We'll Gather Lilacs: Songs of Ivor Novello (Audio CD)
As a novice to the works of Novello, this work is a great introduction to his lush, full, soaringly lyrical and romantic music. The only drawbacks: the cd is mono (the most recent cut is from 1945, but the artists are the originals and one can only imagine the full power of modern orchestration and technical aspects), and there is the slightest hint of distortion -- scratch, fade, from the originals. These are, in my opinion, minor and do not deter from the ultimate enjoyment of the pieces. I was particularly taken with an almost strange sense of 'old' music with decided aspects of the 'new.' That is, one can hear a line from Novello to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Soundheim. At least to my ear! The rousing, almost emotional cut "Rose of England," is worth the price of the cd alone! Someone, somewhere is going to make a mint reviving Ivor Novello. Romantic, uplifting, lyrically astute, and musically simply soaring!
