Book Description

The doctors say she’ll be gone by fall, but they have one last summer. One hot summer to consummate a lifetime of love, to cry together, laugh together ... remember together. When a troubled teenage girl and an injured horse turn to them for help, Mary and Sam Holt find enough room in their own large and breaking hearts to show the girl life’s glories and restore a champion’s will. We’ll Have The Summer is a magnificent story about life, love, and horses.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"We ll have the summer is one of the most touching stories I've ever read. The love triangle between man, woman and horse has never been so poignantly displayed. If you don't cry you eyes out see a doctor immediately, there's something wrong with your tear ducts!"

--Tom Scrima, General Manager of the American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA).

"We'll Have the Summer is a magnificent story about, life, love and horses. Dutch Henry paints vivid and realistic scenes with compelling characters. These days there are many books and writers but I have ridden with Dutch personally. Dutch is the real deal. His talents are equal to the best I've ever seen. He can take us with his words to those places we want to visit or re-visit. I highly recommend him and asked him if I could do so. I want you to enjoy his talents as much as I do."

--Tom Seay, star and producer of RFD-TV's popular show, Best of America By Horseback

"Dutch shows us that connected relationships with both humans and animals are the rich threads that create textured engagement in the tapestry of life. Captured in the flavor of authentic western lifestyle, we see the poignant lives of courageous women, kind-hearted cowboys, devoted friends and the horses that bring them together. We'll Have the Summer is a tale of determination and challenge interwoven with joy, happiness and the depth of character that only a skilled author can produce. Everyone who has felt the bitter sweet pull of love and loss should read this book. It will inspire even the most conventional to unreservedly move past their comfort zone."

--Carole Herder, President, Cavallo Horse & Rider Inc.

From the Author

When I wrote "We'll Have The Summer" I wanted to write a story of an uncommon love so enduring it could overcome insurmountable obstacles. My passion for horses and the way they can enrich a person's life needed to be part of the story. I believe in the power of love and the spirit of the horse; these two forces come together to tell this story. My only job was to fill in the details.

5.0 out of 5 stars We''ll Have The Summer June 10, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you want a quick read that will consume and take you into the world of the characters; this book will do it. I immediately fell in love with each of the characters and the animals. Probably what impressed me more than anything else was the unconditional love that Sam and Mary had for one another. This same love spilled over for others, including animals, that touched their lives. It was quite obvious that the main characters had their share of hard luck but it never defined who they were. Dutch did such a great job of articulating to the point of making it so easy for the reader to feel their own presence throughout the story. You will find yourself sharing the same emotions of each character as you read. I highly recommend We'll Have The Summer. One of the very best books I've had the priviledge to read. Thanks, Dutch.

5.0 out of 5 stars We'll have the Summer May 2, 2011

First book I've read in years - not much of a reader, but love horses! Felt most of the emotions the characters went through in the book. Was happy, smiled, sad, pissed off, felt warm all over. Favorite parts were When Sam brings Commanche home, Mary's determination and when Linda visits Phillip @ the jail. Her words of wisdom to Phillip made me shout "Horray"!! Glad she out smarted him. A must read for horse lovers!!!

Horses and storytelling have always been a part of Dutch Henry's life. It was just natural that the two should someday merge. He's always dreamed of writing. He dabbled throughout his life but got serious a few years ago. His fingers hit the keyboard and he wrote his first novel.

All of Dutch's stories focus around horses. Horses have always been a big part of his life. He grew up on a farm as a foster child and counted the horses he worked with in the field as some of his closest friends. His love of trail riding led him to compete in long distance competitive and endurance riding. These days his relaxation is riding his mare, Keshia, into the woods to the enjoy sights and sounds of nature.

Dutch has turned to the keyboard to salute the people who help horses and horses who help people. As a freelance writer Dutch tells the stories of "People and Horses Helping Horses and People". He writes about therapeutic riding centers, horse rescues that use rescue horses to save at-risk kids, people who devote their lives to save the wild mustangs, mounted patrol officers who use their spare time to teach youths the joy of responsibility and therapeutic riding centers who help our veterans. And, world famous trainers who devote millions to scholarships.

Dutch's articles can be found in many popular equine magazines.
