4.0 out of 5 stars Above average tribute record...Drag the River steals show
Most tributes to great bands are actually pretty horrible, for all the obvious reasons. This one is not. The covers are faithful without being carbon copies. Great songs performed by a bunch of energetic, fresh bands. Highlights are the covers by the Ergs (I'm in Trouble), Druglords of the Avenues (Favorite Thing), Tiltwheel (Skyway) and the Draft (Little Mascara)...

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst cover album since that one where Reel Big Fish covered The Pixies
Simply awful. A bunch of former post-hardcore-cum-alt-country bands ruining great songs by a great band. On "Little Mascara", The Draft remind us why they should have stopped after Hot Water Music; I mean, the intro riff is purposely out of key. Could they not hear that? And Whiskey Sunday's "Can't Hardly Wait" sounds like a constipated trucker grunting into a microphone...

Most tributes to great bands are actually pretty horrible, for all the obvious reasons. This one is not. The covers are faithful without being carbon copies. Great songs performed by a bunch of energetic, fresh bands. Highlights are the covers by the Ergs (I'm in Trouble), Druglords of the Avenues (Favorite Thing), Tiltwheel (Skyway) and the Draft (Little Mascara). The Queers monotone cover of "Unsatisfied" is horrible, but you should have seen that coming a mile away. Right, chip?

The real gem on this record is the cover of "Portland" by Drag the River. Perfect mix of originality and respect to the 'mats version. Excellent track by one of the best bands in the country. Pay attention to this one: it's reason alone to track down this record. (Most of the other bands on this are good too, so there's no need to get WD.)

P.S. For the jaybird fans in the audience, this is NOT the 'mats tribute with the Leatherface cover of "Can't Hardly Wait."

5.0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE! and yes, Drag the River does steal the show, December 29, 2006

The Mats were my favorite band of all-time. I had the pleasure to have seen them numerous times in all of their drunken glory. So, I was interested in hearing this album, primarily, because it was a tribute to the early Mats, the one of Bob Stinson and hard-playing. In this CD, you have primarily punk bands playing the Mats the way it ought to be played, hard! The first twelve songs were so great that I kept wanting to hit the reverse button and play each again, but couldn't because it just kept getting better and better. Great freaking album that you will not regret buying if you are a fan of the Replacements. Blotto and the Tim Version do exceptionally well on their covers. However, the crown jewel is Drag the River's version of "Portland." Dare I say that it is better than the original Mats' version?

4.0 out of 5 stars Righteous Rock, November 15, 2006

Well, if you like the Replacements or indie rock, you'll like this disc. I'm surprised that the previous reviewer didn't mention the second track, by Hi Ho Six Shooter. That's my personal fave. Paul W. would be pleased - wonder if he's heard this yet?

Don't bother. There are better covers of 'Mats tunes by dudes in their basements on Youtube. Go there.

I'll keep it short and sweet: This is the only tribute album I've ever heard that doesn't blow and that I still listen to on purpose. Feels like the Replacements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacements to The REplacements, October 28, 2007
This review is from: We'll Inherit the Earth: Tribute to Replacements (Audio CD)
I am not usually a fan of the Tribute compilation but this is worth buying in my opinion. I had not heard of any of these bands before getting this but almost all get a seal of approval. Its like all these groups got together at some roadhouse bar and had a contest of who could capture the essence of The Replacements rag-tag, sloppy, completely un-selfconscious rock band delivery and many here tied for 1st. Of course some groups fell somewhat off the mark, they didnt get the memo that you just cant take yourself seriously whilst playing The Replacements, but all in all I am very happy with this peoduct. If you are a big Replacements fan or you just want to hear some good underground groups paying omage(ms?) to a legend then get this cd. (If its the latter you might want to go out and buy every Replacements cd up to Pleased To Meet Me) Hope this was helpful in any way...

I don't think the replacements needed the songs to be covered this way. They are plenty raw and crude enough on the their own.
