Book Description

October 7, 2003
Since 1962, Art Buchwald has been by our side through the great tragicomedy of American life-cracking jokes, pestering politicians, and sharing his wisdom.

A pain in the neck to every president from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush, Buchwald knows irony when he sees it, and he sees it almost everywhere-in Bush, Clinton, drug companies, tax cuts, class relations, and Viagra. With this new collection of columns, he reminds us that in this crazy world, at least we can look forward to the next good laugh.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

More humor from Buchwald, whose juicy targets range from Bill Gates to Viagra.

From Booklist

Buchwald is a perennial; he has been a columnist for more than 50 years and a 1982 Pulitzer Prize winner for commentary, whose musings are still featured in more than 500 newspapers. This collection of columns covers the 1990s, full of references to Bill and Hill, downsizing and dot-coms, HMOs and Viagra, and Ken Starr and Monica Lewinsky. Because the book arrives nearly a year after September 11, however, Buchwald has added 18 columns (some serious, but most marked by his trademark wit) from more recent days to the 112 that dissect the earlier period. The title is based on the famous exchange between columnist Mary McGrory and future New York senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan just after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. "We'll never laugh again," McGrory declared. "Mary, we'll laugh again," Moynihan replied, "but we'll never be young again." From one angle, Buchwald's columns are ephemera, poking rather gentle fun at the latest Beltway buzzwords and sacred cows. But that is exactly their value: to remind us of what the talking heads were chattering about 2 or 6 or 10 years ago. Mary Carroll

5.0 out of 5 stars simple, elegant humor, October 18, 2002
This review is from: We'll Laugh Again (Hardcover)
In a remarkable journey, often nostalgic, Art is able to provide a sense of introspection through humor. Nobody escapes his treatment - senate, congress, diplomats, lobbyists, FBI, supreme court, presidents, talking heads, and the average "Joe". Often mixed with gentle irony, each "snippet" makes a point elegantly. His reflections on the Sep 11 tragedy is moving. The changing scenario with respect to homeland security and the new "thought processes" in Washington provides an opportunity to see the sometimes illogical aspects of our new lives. Overall, an excellent collection, reminding once again why Art is such a beloved personality in the newspaper world for such a long time. A must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Find humor in the absurd;and we can all laugh., August 22, 2004
This review is from: We'll Laugh Again (Paperback)

If you've liked Art in the past, you'll enjoy this collection of his columns.Although published in 2003;there are a lot of old pieces dating back to 1991.His columns on everyday observations remain funny, but the political stuff has lost its luster. His columns on "Expert Witness" and "Suite Revenge" are typical of Art's wonderful humor.
Columns about Clinton,Starr,Lewinsky,Whitewater,Tripp,Gore and others make pretty dull reading today.Even Viagra humor is becomming dated.
Maybe what we can see from this book is that we have lost a lot of the good wit and humor we enjoyed in the days of Skelton,Carney&Gleason,Bunker,Carson,Laurel&Hardy,Hope, etc. These artists didn't have to resort to vulgarity and personal attack to get a laugh, and maybe it's time to return to real humor. Thanks,Art,you gave us a lot of good laughs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, August 11, 2010

This review is from: We'll Laugh Again (Hardcover)
I learned a lot about Art in this book. I had been reading his works since the 1960's. I enjoyed his view on how to handle tragedy. It is too bad that he is now gone. I don't think there will ever be another like him.
