Editorial Reviews

Debut album by this band from Sheffield (home to their buddies The Arctic Monkeys as well as Def Leppard, Human League, ABC, Pulp and others). This band has a knack for writing great big hooks that need to be heard. 12 tracks including the single 'Cheshire Cat Smile'. Mercury. 2006.

5.0 out of 5 stars Q: What came first the Milburn or the Monkeys? October 28, 2008
By Sera69
Format:Audio CD
Q: What came first the Milburn or the Monkeys?
A: Doesn't matter.
10 points if you answered correctly.

For a bonus 10pts.
Q: Who's better, who's best?
A: Get over it!

Lose a gazillion points and any cool you might have had left if you think either question matters.

Truth is both are excellent. Milburn are more strident, straight forward and in your face. The Arctic Monkeys have the arty songwriting, grittyness and quirks. Both have the Sheffield twang and are obviously bred like good beer from the same hops.

Who came first? Doesn't matter. Who's best? Honestly, get over it. Milburn are another great band to be filed alongside Maximo Park and Bloc Party at the punkier end of the new wave of Brit Pop spectrum.

So enjoy both, it's double the fun :o) And there will be no more from Milburn, sadly (RIP)

4.0 out of 5 stars New Brit band a knockout! January 26, 2007

"Debut album by this band from Sheffield (home to their buddies The Arctic Monkeys as well as Def Leppard, Human League, ABC, Pulp and others). This band has a knack for writing great big hooks that need to be heard. 12 tracks including the single 'Cheshire Cat Smile'."

That's what the official review said in a nutshell, and I concur about the hooks. This orange covered album has 3 more tunes than the blue cover version. All I can add is that when I first listened to these guys, I was blown away by how great they were, right from the first listening. It reminded me of the when I first heard Elvis Costello's My Aim Is True album and knew that I had stumbled onto someone with amazing talent that stood heads and shoulders above the rest of the yobs out there. They DO NOT sound like EC and The Attractions, mind, but I predict that they will turning heads soon, with this being only their first release. I listen to a lot of new music, and these guys have IT! Well crafted and performed, original pop punk. Give'm a listen.
