Book Description

April 3, 2007
"I was thinking of some kind of initiation. Tailored just for her. The kind that will teach her a lesson not to mess with me."
--from We'll Never Tell

Shandra James is a man stealer. It's a sport to her, a game that she always wins.  As a pledge of the exclusive Alpha Sigma Pi sorority, she should know her place, and know not to throw herself at a sister's boyfriend. But she's marked a new target: Henry Reid.

Henry's fiancée, Phoebe, and her sorority sisters, Miranda and Camille, decide to teach Shandra a lesson one night. A lesson that involves humiliation but nothing more. But unexpectedly the lesson turns deadly and the three women find themselves facing three new rules: Never mention what happened that night, protect each other, and tell no one. Yet when a murderer comes calling, they each discover that rules are meant to be broken. We'll Never Tell is Kayla Perrin's most provocative, suspenseful novel yet.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Feelings of jealousy and hate among the sorority set propel this racy suspense novel from Essence bestseller Perrin (The Delta Sisters). Phoebe Matthews, director of the pledge process at Alpha Sigma Pi at the University of Buffalo, enlists the aid of two of her sorority sisters, Camille and Miranda, in a plot to take Shandra James, the Zeta house sweetheart, down a notch after Shandra crawls all over Phoebe's fiancé at a dance. But what starts out as a harmless prank turns deadly after Shandra goes missing and her body turns up several days later. As the prime suspect, Phoebe must race against the clock to find the murderer before her friends break down and tell all. The recent attacks on co-eds already rocking the UB campus complicate Phoebe's task. Characters that pop off the page and a solid, well-paced plot will gratify Perrin's many fans. (Mar.)

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School—Phoebe is a college student in Buffalo, NY, engaged to her high school sweetheart, and comfortable with her place in society. Then a sorority sister points out that Phoebe's fiancé's eyes, and probably his amorous attentions, are wandering; bad girl and sorority pledge Shandra seems intent on busting up the relationship. In short order, Phoebe battles insecurity, raging jealousy, her boyfriend, a second male friend for whom she feels more than platonic affection, and, of course, Shandra. She and her best buds perform a hazing, with no intention of causing Shandra any lasting harm-but things go awry, and before they can rescue the pledge from a deserted place in nighttime Buffalo, someone murders her. The young women-and Phoebe's fiancé-act with credible immaturity throughout this suspenseful story. While adult readers may be tempted to throttle Phoebe for being so self-obsessed that she can't extricate herself from a downward spiral of bad behavior, teen girls will be sympathetic. The novel is as much suspense as romance, and Perrin's authentic, middle-class African-American cast of college students is an alternative for both urban-lit-reading teens and readers looking for stories featuring a protagonist who is neither white nor middle-aged.—Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

3.0 out of 5 stars Just to Teach Her a Lesson, July 31, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: We'll Never Tell (Paperback)

Essence Best-Selling Author Kayla Perrin delivers a compelling, suspenseful tale in her novel, We'll Never Tell. This fictional story is set at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, NY and centered at the Alpha Sigma Pi sorority house. The reader is immediately introduced to Phoebe, one of the sorority sisters of the house, and her fellow sorors and close friends, Miranda and Camille. Phoebe is a senior and engaged to Henry, the star of the football team and her high school sweetheart. Phoebe also has a good friend, Morgan, who is a member of Henry's fraternity. Phoebe's relationship with Morgan continues to be a sore spot in her and Henry's relationship.

The trouble begins when Shandra James enters the lives of Phoebe and Henry. Shandra is a pledge of Alpha Sigma Pi and is very popular on campus, especially in Henry's fraternity house. Seeing Shandra openly flirt with Henry, and Henry responding, is one of the incidents that send Phoebe over the edge - literally! As a result, Phoebe designs an "initiation" for Shandra alone and drags Miranda and Camille along for the ride. When Shandra turns up missing, the three girls vow to never tell a soul what happened that night. However, Shandra's presence in the sorority house is missed and different people are drawing their own conclusions.

Kayla Perrin created an exciting, nail-biting story of what it looks like when jealousy gets out of control. There were a lot of characters introduced that the author did a fairly good job of weaving into the storyline and helping the reader get to know. Yet, being that this is basically a "whodunit", it is important for the reader to be able to exonerate in their own mind the characters that were not involved in the crime. I recommend We'll Never Tell to those that have enjoyed Kayla Perrin's other novels and would enjoy a suspenseful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars We'll Never Tell, April 1, 2008
This review is from: We'll Never Tell (Paperback)
There is a lot more going on at the University of Buffalo then classes and extracurricular activities. Phoebe Matthews and her sorority sisters cook up some trouble in this suspenseful novel by Kayla Perrin.

When Phoebe spots Shandra James -- the school flirt with the Beyonce looks (and booty) -- hanging all over her boyfriend Henry, she sees red. Stepping up to her, she gives her a warning and tells her to back off. Not taking the hint, Shandra shows readers that she is the type of girl who goes for what she wants - no matter who tries to stop her.

Phoebe and her best friends and sorority sisters Camille and Miranda decide to teach this pledge a little lesson. What was supposed to be just fun, games and a little humiliation, turns into a deadly prank, and the three friends find themselves in the middle of a crime scene.

When word gets around that Shandra is missing, everyone begins to get suspicious. And although the three did not commit the crime, the evidence points directly to them. This is a very tough situation to get out of and these girls are about to pay the price and lose everything - unless they figure out exactly who else was out there that night.

Ms. Perrin did an awesome job of developing all the characters' stories. So good, that you really had no clue who to believe, which made figuring out this whodunit all the more difficult.
