3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good ...
this book was obviously well researched, but i wouldn't say it was well written. i actually wonder if it was even edited ... but the plot is quite applicable to today's situations.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking read, highlighting the danger of our open borders, August 29, 2006

Syrian-backed Hezbollah agents find fertile soil among the radical Chicano "Aztlan reconquista" population in the Southwest. Terrorists smuggle explosives and livestock-killing germs from Mexico into the USA across our wide-open borders. Truck bombs and arson attacks destroy critical infrastructure and spread terror across the Southwest, while other enemy agents spread hoof-and-mouth disease germs across the USA.

The U.S. economy is rocked, and the Southwest is torn by riots led by anti-American Chicano extremists. The U.N. declares that the Southwest must be able to determine its own future, outside of U.S. control. The situation spins out of control, leading eventually to U.N. "peacekeepers" landing in Southern California. Cuban "peacekeepers" enter Arizona from Mexico. The United States military is still completely preoccupied with ongoing wars overseas. Is there any way to eject the invaders, and keep the Southwest as an integral part of the United States?

Carpenter's solution, and the positive side of this grim equation, is for thousands of patriotic American civilians to head to the Southwest to fight to defend America's sovereign borders. In this novel, formal and informal militia groups from across the West race to the borders to do battle with United Nations forces.

Would this in fact happen? I don't know. Carpenter might be overly optimistic in this regard. In any case, "A Well Regulated Militia" is a thought-provoking and very timely read. Beyond any doubt, he is spot-on about the dangers presented by our wide open borders. The same route traveled by thousands of alien invaders every day could also be traveled by enemy terrorists, who may already be taking advantage of America's virtually unguarded frontier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cliches Don't Work, June 25, 2006
This review is from: A Well Regulated Militia... (Paperback)
None of the old cliches fit this book. It doesn't, "seem to jump out of the headlines", it is the headlines. It isn't a book that everyone, "should read", everyone must read it. It applies to today's dangerous world in ways that anyone can understand. It's not, "fast paced", it roars. The characters are not, "believable", they are your next door neighbors. The events are not just, "believable", they are on the front page of tommorrow's paper, or the day after. Anyone that starts this book is in for more than just, "the ride of your life", They're in for much, much, more. A true pleasure from an excellent author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read with a Timely Issue, December 10, 2006
This review is from: A Well Regulated Militia... (Paperback)
Reads like a Tom Clancy with all the technical details layed out for you. Well developed plot as well as characters that are fully fleshed out and identifiable. Furthermore, many of the characters do not suffer from the "Stormtrooper Effect" (hence, they are mortal and some of them die). Also, the antagonists are believable the reader can often empathize with them. The book interweaves known terrorist organizations that could impact the United States in a big way with underhanded dealings from the UN which climaxes with a War for the American Southwest. If your concerns run along with terrorism, open borders, immigration and US's "War on Terror" then you should enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fiction or Future Fact? Tom Clancy watch out., May 22, 2006
This review is from: A Well Regulated Militia... (Paperback)
I read this a couple months before the big illegal alien marches began. When the marches happened it sent a chill up my spine. He described them to a tee I was just expecting the crap to really hit the fan but I wont let out any spoilers.

I am a big Tom Clancy fan. I enjoy "what if" scenarios that are reality based and address current political conditions. What I was able to read of this book drew me in and caught me up in what to me was a completely realistic situation.

I stumbled onto "A Well Regulated Militia" on a website the author was using to get feedback. I only managed to read the first four chapters before the author pulled the book. I was disappointed as I had already been hooked, now I just need to buy the book and finish it.

A big plus with me was that instead of some shadowy uber warrior government agency saving the day for all us lesser beings it was Joe American who steps up. In my opinion this added a level of realism. I am looking forward to reading more of this book soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWRM the novel, December 14, 2006
This review is from: A Well Regulated Militia... (Paperback)
I started reading this book and I could not put it down. It is very well researched as well as well written. Tom Clancy would be hard pressed to write a better book IMO. It is worth the price you pay for this book not because it is just a good read but because it is very contemporarry and I have to say somewhat frieghtening as well. The threats to our country and our way of life (that is the basis for this book) are very real. There is a war happening on our southern border. The government and the mainstream media aren't telling you about it. It's a very bad case of ostrich syndrome! I highly recomend that you purchase this book and pass it around to your friends and family. It's not just a damn good read, people need to read this book so they will understand that is happening to this country.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must read book, June 7, 2006
By
This review is from: A Well Regulated Militia... (Paperback)
This is one of the best 'fiction' books I've read since Patriots surviving the coming economic collapse. I put fiction in quotes because a lot of the ideas presented in here seem to be pulled from tomorrow's headlines. It is really pretty scary to see how a lot of this could happen or be happening right now.

Also like Patriots to an extent, it would be good to have a highlighter handy when reading since there are some real gems in here worth remembering

This book easily held my attention and kept me wanting to read a little bit more instead of putting it down.

A great, riveting, not-so-ficitonal novel of the current immigration situation and America's place in the world today. It is almost as if the world took note from this book in the events that have been happening. The government could use this book as a potential threat primer. Detailed, non-stop action from an author that has put serious energy into his writing. If you like Tom Clancy, this is much better, and very relevant to our current times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great read - but it is much more than a great read....., May 21, 2006
This review is from: A Well Regulated Militia... (Paperback)
John's book is an excellent read. I know this sounds "cliche" - but his book really IS about "tomorrow's headlines". He did a fantastic job of describing in a clear manner, the problems our associated border with Mexico poses - not just for us - but for Mexico and - more importantly - the easy access that terrorists have with our "soft under-belly".

Using current and future world events - that are all extremely plausable - our nation's security is left hanging by a mere thread - and is "saved" by the selfless dedication of "regular" American's - in regular American fashion.

All patriotic American's should have this book in thier library.

I wish that all Americans especially would read this book. It shows clearly conditions and events Americans may well have to confront as their country continues on its current path.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for our time, June 4, 2006
This review is from: A Well Regulated Militia... (Paperback)
A Well Regulated Militia, is a book for our time,, peering into the darkness to expose common fears that all Americans should share about the possibilities of invasion if we do not strengthen our borders. A well written and thought out story, that compels the reader to ask the question " what If " within their mind.
