5.0 out of 5 stars Original 1966 Kinks compilation album now on CD!
Here's a great little gem of a CD that was released in 2001 by Sanctuary Records, a British company that owns the catalog of Pye Records, the Kinks' original recording label. Despite its budget price, this is a bonafide release of an album that was originally released in September 1966 on Pye's budget label, Marble Arch. The CD reproduces the original cover art of the...

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit different from the LP version I bought
This was my first Kinks album, which I bought on vinyl in the early Eighties. But it had "Lola" on it in place of "Don't You Fret". It was great, for an LP. Slightly less great for a CD. Ten songs is far too few.

I'd recommend it for nostalgia value only. If you want a great compilation for only about $12, get the Ultimate Collection. 2 CDs and lots more...

The CD reproduces the original cover art of the album and also includes the album's original liner notes on the rear of the CD jewel case.

"Well Respected Kinks" is a compilation of 10 tracks that were culled from the band's early (1964-1965) singles, EPs and albums. The play time is just under 25 minutes long and, by modern standards, may appear to be chintzy, but the 10 songs constitute the tracks that appeared on the original album - five songs on each side. Here's the track listing:

1. Well Respected Man
2. Where Have All The Good Times Gone?
3. Till The End Of The Day
4. Set Me Free
5. Tired Of Waiting
6. All Day And All Of The Night
7. I Gotta Move
8. Don't You Fret
9. Wait Till Summer Comes Along
10. You Really Got Me

This CD will appeal to the casual Kinks listener or British Invasion music fan because of the hit songs that are included. For serious Kinks collectors, this CD represents a great opportunity to acquire an album that has been out-of-print for decades at a bargain price. Special thanks must go to Sanctuary Records (distributed in the U.S. by BMG) which is fast becoming the British version of Rhino Records. Check out their CD "The British Are Coming, Volume 1" to see what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely essental, never tired., February 22, 2005

Though I only have this album on vinyl, and recommend it, the cd will do just fine for those who cannot find the record. If you are someone who has just gotten into the Sixties and the amazing "real" rock and roll that stemmed from it, then "Well Respected Kinks" is a perfect album with which to start. Like their British counterparts, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, the Kinks delivered cheeky, gritty, and incredibly catchy songs that endure to this day.

Short enough to play any time, yet not so short that you feel cheated, "Well Respected Kinks" is a must-have album for those looking to get into the Kinks and Sixties rock. Just try to play it without feeling enthused. It really takes a person back to a certain time, too. Regardless of age, the Kinks are great for anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn, can't beat the price!, August 10, 2005
This review is from: Well Respected Kinks (Audio CD)
As most people know, The Kinks were one of several British bands to come to the United States in the early 1960's, part of the "British Invasion" (started by the Beatles in '64). And of course, they had some great, catchy hits. "You Really Got Me" (one of the most recognizable riffs ever), "All Day And All Of The Night", "Tired Of Waiting For You", et cetera. "Well Respected Kinks" was a compilation album, released in 1966, featuring their hits up til that point (so obviously, no "Lola" here).

The coolest part of it on CD format is the price! I mean, for less than a 10-spot, you get the aforementioned hits, plus the toe-tapping "A Well Respected Man", the almost-jazzy "I Gotta Move", the mid-tempo rocker "Set Me Free", et cetera. If you're just getting into the Kinks, this is a great place to start.

The best part about the Kinks' early work is that it's not quite so polished. They sound like a very talented garage/party band, and the music can rock a little, and is fun. Why would you listen to boring sludge like Breaking Benjamin when you have The Kinks?

Yeah, if you're into The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and '60s music in general, this is a great compilation to introduce you to the Kinks. The price is right and the songs are great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet, June 9, 2004
This review is from: Well Respected Kinks (Audio CD)
All the Klassic Kinks stuff is on here from pre-67. The songs "Tired of Waiting For You", "Where Have All the Good Times Gone" and "You Really Got Me" make up for the pricetag itself. Plus seven others. The seven other songs are also beatuiful British pop songs. It only clocks in under 25 minutes, but it's worth it. So, if you want good Kinks from their early days...buy this. After this the Kink Kronikles is another compilation you should buy. It has more kool Kinks tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kinks all the way!!! They Really got me!!, April 11, 2002
This review is from: Well Respected Kinks (Audio CD)
I got this album when I was a wee lass, and I am delighted to find it on CD to give me the listening pleasure (sorry, I wore that puppy out!!) I have so missed.

This album was, at that time, all their biggest hits to date and that was a lot!!! From the first time I heard YOU REALLY GOT ME, Ray Davies and her brother Dave set themselves far apart from the rest of the British Rock Invasion. Their sound was pulsing, vital, gritty, raw and really got me!!!

So any Kink fan - THIS IS A MUST!!! And if you have not discovered the Kinks (what planet are you from again???) this is a great introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Catchiest Of The Kinks, May 3, 2006

Who can argue? The Kinks were a great band. They mixed elements of rockabilly, early punk, and poprock to form one of the best sounds from the "British Invasion" era. Ray Davies was an excellent songwriter and the band always played to their fullest. For sure an underrated hit that lives on today and will probably continue to grace our speakers for years to come. They're truly a musical treat, and that's especially apparent with this early compilation album of some of their best work. While some stand out more than others, these are all keepers. It's one of those CDs that you pop in and don't bother to fool with. You just let it play and have a good time. That's what The Kinks are all about. Raw and energetic fun with plenty of catchy melodic appeal fit for any fan of 60's rock and roll. For anybody interested in this band, "Well Respected Kinks" is a must-own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Bit O' Fun, March 10, 2008
This review is from: Well Respected Kinks (Audio CD)
Its not all the songs you know. Its not nearly the best of the Kinks songs because its just a few songs compared to all the amazing stuff we're all so hooked on. But its a really nice way to start a Kinks collection or just a nice basic set of songs for a really good price. Its well worth the few bucks you may pay for it. Its certainly NOT a cheap, bad-sounding compilation. Ive had this one for years and Ive gotten a lot of fun out of it. Most people want ALL the well known Kinks songs but if you or someone you know is just starting to get into the Kinks- or- if you just want to have a real little piece of Kinks history-- this is a great CD to have. I was surprised. So dont judge this one by the low price or the short song list. The Kinks did so many awesome songs I dont know if its possible to put 'em all on one CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good kinks to pick up if you need one!!!!! Cheap to boot!!!!!, October 29, 2006
This review is from: Well Respected Kinks (Audio CD)
This is the first and only kinks album I have right now, and it really has all the ones that I know and love. Clocking in at 25 minutes, this is a quick short album, but it preserves the continuity of the original compilation album released in 1966. All the hits, you really got me, set me free, where have all the good times gone, and all day and all of the night. Just one fine album, and picked it up for just under five bucks new. Gotta have this album.
