Joey Baron keeps the same band for "We'll Soon Find Out", a follow-up to his 1997 release "Down Home". As on the previous recording, Baron continues to explore his Southern roots with this line-up. Arthur Blythe, alto sax, finds many ways to express the blues over the start/stop rhythm of "Slow Charleston". It's also a good chance to hear Bill Frisell playing the blues, something I haven't heard since "Love Motel" from Frisell's "Before We Were Born" recording. "Closer Than You Think" starts off with some atmospheric exploration-type chords before taking off into a leaping-and-loping riff. The band jumps into a semi-Latin groove on "Junior" with Baron showing why he is one of the best drummers in the business. "Time to Cry" is exactly that - a mournful country-blues song that just drips she-done-run-off-and-left-me with Blythe's alto providing the bright side to Frisell's despairing guitar. "Wisely", like "M" & "Contact", is a Frisell-type ballad, but with a more tuneful melody line; with Frisell's guitar being such a prominent instrument in this band most of the accompaniment sounds like it came out of the Bill Frisell songbook but the melodies are different than ones Frisell would normally write. "Bit o' Water" is an uptempo Caribbean-style number with Ron Carter getting in a good solo with back-up from Baron (like the Baron/Cohen breaks duets in Masada). "Equaled" is a straight-up bop number with excellent performances from everyone. "We'll Soon Find Out" is a little slower-paced than "Down Home" but finds the band more cohesive than on the earlier recording. It's a great follow-up and should appeal to fans of Joey Baron, Bill Frisell, and maybe Dave Douglas.

The line up says it all really. Frisell, Baron, Ron Carter and Blythe... Most of the CD is laid back and has the musicians working more for the song than the solo. Inspiring effort by Baron. "Down Home," the first album featuring this line up is good - but this one has more Baronisms. I don't think there is a single drum solo on "Down Home" but that album still works too... Anytime Frisell and Baron get together - something magical happens... Check it out!

Drummer Joey Baron's made amazing album with his friends.Drummer Joey Baron is a best rhythmic force. Baron made quartet of Carter. They play snapping, funky grooves, with Frisell and Bguitarist Bill Frisell, alto saxist Arthur Blythe, and bassist Ron lythe pairing up as so many sax and guitar duos did in the soul-infused 1960s. Best jazz album with famous names. True is true.

The previous outing for this all-star aggregation, Down Home, was a lot of fun, but not quite convincing, as the "down-hominess" seemed a little forced, sort of the jazz equivalent of one of the old early-'70s "concept" albums that rock bands felt for some reason obligated to put out from time to time. This one sounds much more natural, and by the second cut, "Closer Than You Think," where even Ron Carter gets to stretch out and take a bit of the spotlight (he had been pretty well relegated to a supporting role on Down Home), you know these guys are cooking together and are going to be laying down some really great grooves.

All the cuts are by Frisell, but seem to be written with his bandmates in mind. "Junior," for instance, sounds as though it would fit right into an Arthur Blythe album. Everybody gets a chance to shine, but always within the context of pulling together: these guys sound like a real band, not just four studio guys knocking out another CD. Good, good stuff, one of the best jazz CDs to come along for quite a while.

Joey Baron has been one of the most astounding drummers in jazz since the 80s. His style is very loose and is also very broad in spectrum. This album is the folow-up to his album "Down Home," which features the same musicians, which brings me to talk about each of the musicians on the album.

Bill Frisell has long been a favorite of mine. I have almost everything he's ever recorded. I'm afraid I'll never be able to collect it all, but it's still a work in progress. His playing is so versatile. He really does fit into almost any setting. He's without a shadow of a doubt one of the most original jazz guitarists in the last 30 years.

Arthur Blythe is someone who I'm not very familiar with, but after hearing this recording there's no doubt that he's been around for quite some time. He's got a great saxophone tone. Nothing harsh about it and he doesn't squawk or honk like so many other players do. He just plays one beautiful note after the other. Great player, which I'm going to check out.

Ron Carter doesn't really need an introduction does he? He's one of the most recorded jazz bassists of all-time. Ron's played with all of the greats most notably Miles Davis. He's definitely the stuff of legends. I've always like his bass playing. He has a great technique. Always an interesting player.

The music on "We'll Soon Find Out" is very deverse. From haunting ballads to samba-like uptempo numbers to down home blues. It's got a great vareity. As with everything I write about music, the music speaks for itself.

This albums is recommended for fans of any of these musicians and for just the casual jazz listener.
