Doesn't sound very interesting does it? A duo of trombone & guitar. Wrong! We're talking about the late Joe Pass & JJ Johnson, the best, or among the best in the world.Lately, around the last 15 years, the duo jazz setting has become quite popular, The recording that begins with Jobims Wave. Not bad. On cut 5, is Limehouse Blues, just another tune out of New Orleans' (BTW one reviewer said something about the trombone comping. Trombones don't comp.) Guitars comp.What we have here is the 12 bar blues format, & what they do is called by we musicians point-counterpoint.
This recording is exciting, yet relaxing at the same time."How Long has this Been going on it's point-counterpoint all the way.You get the idea. Hmmm, relaxing & exciting; I guess it's a kind of an oxymoron. . The last tune (10) is "When Lights are Low." Till now I thought Miles had the best version of this tune, but no more. These two jazz icons play it with such aplomb. 5 stars & thanks for reading this review.

Wonderful versions of standards (one original by J.J.) in an unusual duo setting. I particularly enjoyed Blue Bossa and though a huge fan of Joe Pass, I am going to steal parts of J.J.'s solo and not Joe's when I play this song. This album is "good fun" and I like the concept of a Trombone comping.

Joe Pass and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen set an incredibly high standard with their duo and trio recordings, and so its hard not to hear this album in light of those and to find it significantly thinner. The tunes are all quite good, but I found nothing spectacular on it, which surprised me since I like J.J. Johnson a great deal. It's still a fine jazz album though, with a nice selection of tunes. The guitar/trombone combination is also a nice sound in its own right, and I like to listen to it just to hear the tone.
