Book Description

August 3, 2006
The Well at the World's End was among the very first of its kind--it is an epic romance of duplicity, machination, passion, and wizardry, and is, in short, a vast odyssey into the weird. It is a beautifully rich fantasy, a vibrant fairy tale without fairies. It is the most entrancing of William Morris's late romances--part futuristic fantasy novel, part old-fashioned fairy tale. Morris writes his magic love story with a sense of color and pattern, and the sheer imaginative fervor of one of the most brilliant decorative artists that has ever lived. Newly designed and typeset in a modern 6-by-9-inch format by Waking Lion Press.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Given that William Morris is better known for his art than his writing, and that reprints of "The Well at the World's End" are available from multiple sources, I was looking for a book with an attractive cover, for a Christmas gift. The online image from this seller shows an angelic-looking woman and the title and author's name in an attractive typeface. The book that I was sent, though, had plain, gray boards and felt cheaply manufactured. I should have sent it back, but didn't have much time - I made my own dust jacket with the help of downloaded images and a trip to FedEx Office.... not quite the same, though. I know hardbacks are expensive to produce and the book business is hurting, but I still think this purchase was an overpriced ripoff.
