It is a cheap gun, granted but it heats quickly and has no problem doing the light soldering I have to do (joining 18ga speaker wires). I have had mine for 3 months. I do know that this gun and most of this type use high amperage at low voltage to work. It doesn't take much resistance to drop the voltage to 0. I expect that sudden losses of heat are coming from corrosion at the tips. A little cleaning and tightening should restore normal operation. This is what I did on an older Wen gun that would occasionally stop dead. Will update in a few months to see if my gun falls subject to the catastrophic failure the other reviewers report, util then I've got to give it 5 stars.

Update May 6, 2012
Have used for many hours without incident until today. The tip broke which considering the amount of use is to be expected. Have used it regularly (every couple of days) which probably keeps corrosion build up at bay and thus I have not had any of the sudden failures mentioned by others. Ordered two tips so that next time I'll have a spare. In consideration of the price and service delivered this tool deserves a full five stars. The next time the Weller folk revisit this design (apparently every couple of decades) I do suggest the addition of a bright LED focused on the tip. I have found the lights to be a valuable assistance on other tools I have.

Update October 20, 2012
Gun still working well. Have a suggestion on checking gun out. A gun only suffering from corrosion such that it won't heat up will likely still make a humming sound and possibly you will be able to feel it. These guns (not only this one but other models and other makes) need you only to remove the tip brighten the contact areas with some sandpaper and reinstall.

I wish I had seen the earlier review before wasting money on this.
It never got very hot, and now seems to be dead (after maybe an hour of use).

Warning, this item uses a tip that is not made anymore. I have this unit and while it does the job I purchased it for, (simple wiring soldering) the tips burn up very very quickly and need replacing after only 20 or 30 minutes of use. I have searched hi and low on the internet for replacement tips and the new style tips that are advertised for the 7200 do not fit this version of the 7200. This version requires an allen wrench to replace the tips and the new tips have a hex head screw in type of tip. THEY DO NOT FIT THIS MODEL. They are both 7200, but be warned, there are two versions with the same model number.

This is the third worthless Weller soldering gun/pen I've bought. Started with a battery operated pen---thorough-going junk. Thought maybe it just wasn't powerful enough, so I got a 25W pen---thorough-going junk. Thought it wasn't powerful enough, so I got this 75W gun. Thorough-going junk. Gets hot for a little while, then cold.

Thats 0 for 3. Last Weller product I ever buy.

My Weller 7200 works fine, just be sure to check the posts that bind the soldering tip. This gun heats by passing high current through the copper soldering tip. Poor conductivity will lead to poor heating as reported in many posts here. When the tip is secured correctly, the gun heats quickly and takes care of my basic soldering needs.

I had the same problem with my Weller 7200 as the previous reviewers. It worked for a short time and now won't heat up, even with new tips. I wonder what foreign country it's made in? The reviews on the 8200 seem much better.

I used this product twice and stored it for about 2 months. Then i had a small wire to solder
and it would not heat up enough to slice thru butter. Total garbage. i paid too much money for this junk
