5.0 out of 5 stars Weller D550PK Soldering Gun
I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hoping for more heat to cut rope and poor latch
I bought this to supplement the smaller 100/140 watt unit to speed up heating with the cutting tip. Near as I can tell, the output voltage is the same for both guns. The larger unit did not heat the cutting tip any hotter. The large solder tip definitely has more heat, but the smaller tips showed no difference. It is a good gun, but did not do as I hoped it would with the...

This soldering gun is a classic, and constitutes an example of a great tool that has NOT been replaced with a cheaper-to-produce but inferior product. The modern guns are as good as those I used when I was a boy 40 years ago. I recently purchased this one to (finally) replace a lower wattage pencil soldering iron I've been putting up with for years after my first Weller gun broke. This gun has all the heat I need and then some. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting and sitting while waiting for some twisted wires to finally get hot enough to melt the solder. With the 550 that wait time is only about 10-15 seconds for your typical 12 or 14 gauge stranded wire (such as you find in larger circuits in cars). It helps to use the thinner 1.0 mm gauge rosin core solder of course. Now that I have this gun I feel like I'm set for another 20 years of use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Soldering Gun, January 28, 2010

Really like the soldering Gun. I bought this to replace an older lower wattage (standard one) weller that no longer works. Wish the case had a bit more storage for a real reel of solder, etc. Nice for heavier work, but not so nice for fine electronic work.
I would recomend this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good soldering gun starter for the money, September 5, 2010

The Weller Soldering Gun is a solid value for the price. This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work.

Weller has been making guns like this for decades and they know how. It was received with one of the element nuts a bit loose, which resulted in poor heating, but after that was tightened it works great. I use this gun for soldering large electrical connectors, sometimes outdoors in the cold. It has plenty of power, heats quickly (not as quickly as the old Wen guns, but still quickly) and is not too heavy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gun, January 20, 2009
This review is from: Weller D550PK 120-volt Professional Soldering Gun Kit 260/200 Watts (Tools & Home Improvement)
I recently purchased this for auto wiring soldering. It is so much better than anything else that I've used (guns and irons). The high wattage makes it extremely fast to use. Get one!

5.0 out of 5 stars soldering Gun, August 24, 2010

My Father had a soldering Gun just like this one, and he gave me his when he no longer was in need of it. I misplaced it when we moved from California to Utah. So I purchased this one, and wouldn't use any other style Iron. I have a 1972 V/W Beetle that I am installing a custom H/D sound system in, and I want all my electrical connections soldered and not crimped or solderless connectors. This gun is very comfortable to handle and does an excellent job. Thank you Weller.

Updated to add information about the case. The only way I could open the case was to pry the latch open with a screwdriver. It took a little carving and shaping the latch with heat to make it work as it should.
