From the Manufacturer

The Magna-Lite from Weller is the first butane micro torch designed for real work. Even though it weighs just 1.3 ounces and is less than three-Inch long, the Magna-Lite generates a 2400-Degree Fahrenheit/1,300-Degree Celsius flame that lasts for up to a total of 25 minutes on a single charge of fuel. That's enough energy to thaw frozen locks, seal the ends of synthetic rope, contract heat-shrink tubing, and perform countless other tasks around the home, shop, boat, or campsite.

I picked one of these up because it looked like a neat little thing to have around. When I got home I was disappointed when after filling it with fuel that the flame wouldn't catch. Eventually after many clicks I got it to hold a flame, but it was more a game of chance than reliability. So out of box it's pretty much useless as a use-able tool.

However, I decided to try modifying it some.I popped off the bottom piece of plastic (You can just prop it up a little with a screw driver or anything that can get inside the tiny gap between the plastic and the body, then just pull off the plastic) that controls flame height, and underneath was a small bit of plastic that prevents the flame height controller to be moved any further. I took some nail snipers and sniped off the plastic and snapped back on the plastic flame controller.

Now I can adjust the flame height much further than what the manufacturer allowed, and it actually works how I imagined it would when I first purchased it! It seems as if they limited the flame height just a bit too low when they made it; not high enough to actually allow the flame to be ignited properly.

Works like crap at first, but with simple modification it works how it should.

I have two and they are both worthless. They fail to light or stay lit. Even if they did light, the striker is extremely stiff and hard to press.

Stay away from this one.

My Weller is about five years old. I use it for Maint, (shrink tubing. melting ends of plastic base rope and lighting barbecues and cigarettes at home. The bottom ring around the adjustment screw is missing, but its easier to adjust the flame. It holds a large quantity of fuel and lasts me for months between refueling. It always lights when the body has been warmed in my pocket. It you leave out in the cold, Butane is hard to light. I just rub it in my hands if its chilled and that strong jet flame comes back quickly. The striker mechanism and light are still working. If they are still made the same way now, as they did five years ago when I bought this one it still should great lighter. It also should be a great camping and survival lighter.

My only regret is that I didn't order two or more considering the shipping was the same price as the torch. -blt

After reading the preceding reviews, I guess I lucked out on my purchase! My torch lighter is made in Taiwan (sounds better than "Made in China"?), and flaunts a reputable American label "Weller" (sounds better than "Acme"?). I've had this for about a year with absolutely no problems. It does have a slightly hard push-down sparker (which only adds to its ruggedness and decisive ignition); but the force required to activate the spark is nothing even close to bringing about a callused thumb. The gas release-Spark timing relationship is perfect; the generous fuel reservoir supports extended "burn time" and the adjustable flame is hot enough for most minor DIY jobs on the go. A fierce flame jets out of a cylindrical "well" that's lined with a protective ceramic (??) "Sleeve" which, in conjunction with the surrounding alloy enclosure, functions like a heatsink. This is necessary to minimize exposure of the fuel reservoir to high temperatures - and subsequent explosion (as is painfully evident with cheap plastic cigarette lighters if lit for more than a few seconds). Another safety feature that serves to distance the flame from the fuel is the empty chamber between the fuel reservoir and the combustion area. A thick, high impact, pressure resistant plastic material envelops the working "guts" of the lighter. The material is translucent/transparent so you could determine beforehand if it requires filling. Or you could tweak out for hours looking at the internal working mechanism wondering, "Darn! Why didn't I think of that first?" as you reach for another cigarette! Things I'd change? A sturdier mechanism to hold the protective cap securely closed.Read more ›

I had this weller torch for about 3 years (used lightly, mostly for heat shrink) and it was great until it stopped working. It slowly developed issues with the thing igniting up until the point where it would no longer ignite and stay lit. I could hear the butane hissing and see the spark but the flame would not stay lit for more than a split second. I ended up modifying the torch as described by another reviewer here and that actually got the flame to stay lit (and it made the flame much larger) but it still would cut out after about 5 seconds of being lit (which is better than before)

I don't know if it's the brand of butane I used (Master Appliance, got it at the same store as I did the torch) that might have clogged the gas port or if its just a design flaw but in the end it no longer usable.
