I purchased this item as a spare unit for the WES51 station. I also ordered several other tips so I can have at least two tip sizes available when needed. Changing pencils is a snap and they heat up to full power in about 30 seconds. The extra pencil with a different tip and the station is perfect for my application.

Does exactly what the descriptions says it should. Replaced the failed "Soldering Pencil" on my WES51 station. Works like a champ.

Great little pencil solderer, but note that the plug is not standard, it is one of those circular ones made to fit the Weller soldering station. This pencil is basically a replacement for that station setup. 50-watt gives you more power than most pencil solderers. And the tip is better steel than the cheapo ones so it lasts longer. If you use pencil solderers a lot, this is the one to get.

Hope that helps.

The Weller PES51 Soldering pencil does not have the same connector as the PES50 and therefore does not work with WES50 station even though the description says otherwise.

I was disappointed when the soldering iron part of my WES51 soldering station broke after only a few hours of use, but this replacement part did fix the problem and I've had no problems since. There are a wide variety of tips available, it heats up reasonably fast, and the ergonomics are good. Nonetheless, if I had to buy a soldering station again, I'd go with the competition (Hakko or Aoyue). Weller clearly skimped on quality control if they ship thinks that break after an hour of use. Since the negative points are really about the WES51 itself and not about this replacement part, I'll give this the 5 stars it deserves though.

Treat this tool carefully - it will give excellent service to the experienced professional or hobbiest, but it will fail if you clean the tip by drowning the the tip and pencil in water or corrosive cleaners - always use tips in good condition, without rust or corrosion on the bottom of the tip where the thermocouple is inserted and the bottom outside surface where the heater surrounds the base of the tip - these conditions will cause the heater to overheat or become unstable or not work at all.

Bought this an a replacement for my solder station. Works just like the one that came with it the original solder station. Good feel and control, with temperature control spot on. Would recommend, but be sure to buy other tips for a more versatile use of this iron.

I purchased this replacement soldering iron on 11/25/13 and it's been a little over 1.5 years and it has pretty much stopped working. It seems the contact to the thermal sensor or something like that inside the iron's wiring is faulty.

Normally, everytime you turn on the Weller WESD51 Base Station, the temperature readout starts rising as the soldering iron heats up, plain and simple. Mine, however, starts going up and then jumps up to 885 or 900 degrees and the iron never heats up.

The "solution" I found is when I pickup the iron, I rotate it slowly until I find the angle where the iron's cable hangs in such a way that the contact is made inside the iron's cable and it starts to work again, which isn't a solution, really, but it certainly proves that the problem is in the wiring plus it proves that I got a bad iron that didn't last more than 1.5 years :-( and I'm just a tinkerer! I don't even use the iron on a weekly basis, oftentimes not even on a monthly basis so I'm disappointed that I have to buy a 2nd replacement iron but let's hope that this is the last time.
