So you turn it on, by the time you grab your solder and flux brush the thing is ready to go. 12 seconds, even on max.
If all you have ever used is the little orange utility grade irons, this thing will change your life.
I use it for a variety of minor electronic repairs and RC Racing stuff, this thing will solder most common wire gauges in fractions of a second.
I don't know if its the way it heats or what the tips are made of, but the tips never get that black carbon buildup on them like cheap ones.
Wmp is discontinued, so I received a different model hand piece back from warranty. So now I'm stuck with $100+ in worthless non returnable tips, and holder designed for wmp(too small for new hand piece). I bought this specifically for the wmp, and now after an hour total of usage, I have no wmp, no holder for new hand piece, and out a bunch of money for tips. Can't tell you how much I regret not going with Hakko or metcal
The change to the WD1001 was dramatic. The iron itself is really thin and stays cool to the touch. The tip is tiny, heats up in ~12 seconds, and leaves a shinny dot rather than a dull blob. However, the most important part is that the tip is small and precise enough that I didn't have to do any rework. A simple project that I've done a dozen times before was done in half the time.
Being able to set the temp let me follow the component specs so I wouldn't accidentally cook it if I just took a little too long with the more traditional hobbyist iron.
A pro may want a more sophisticated station with a better iron, however this is an outstanding improvement for an active hobbyist.
Points for improvement: push-on switch instead of rocker switch and lighted display.
Excellent product and it's Made in Germany!!! Tip price range $10-30 but that's ok, you know how much you can make.

I have owned a dozen soldering irons through the years. Several more expensive than this model and yet this unit exceeds my expectations.Published 2 months ago by L.Sievers

Great buy. Nothing in this price range can beat it. Although I paid lower price for the 1001 model, I actually received the the more expensive WP80 pencil.Published on September 10, 2013 by Faisal H. Khan
