This is a sturdy, well built unit as you should expect for something in this price tier.

So you turn it on, by the time you grab your solder and flux brush the thing is ready to go. 12 seconds, even on max.

If all you have ever used is the little orange utility grade irons, this thing will change your life.

I use it for a variety of minor electronic repairs and RC Racing stuff, this thing will solder most common wire gauges in fractions of a second.

I don't know if its the way it heats or what the tips are made of, but the tips never get that black carbon buildup on them like cheap ones.

I got this station a few months ago. It turns on and hits its target temperature within a few ( to tens of) seconds, all the way up to its 850degree limit. It appears to maintain its temperature quite nicely even when the tip is put on a fairly large heat sink.

This iron is small enough for SMD components while packing enough power for 12 gauge copper wire or high power PCBs. As other say, it's ready in about 10 seconds. Any temperature can be set to match the type of solder/flux that you're using. Minor downsides: The simple 5 button interface requires keeping the manual nearby for programming. As with every Weller product that I've ever owned, the tip frequently comes loose. It really needs a power indicator light.

Edit: originally rated 5 stars. No longer works. About the 4th time I used this, approximately 1 hour of total usage, no longer heats up. Display only shows dashes. Totally sucks, now I have to pay to send it in for warranty.

Wmp is discontinued, so I received a different model hand piece back from warranty. So now I'm stuck with $100+ in worthless non returnable tips, and holder designed for wmp(too small for new hand piece). I bought this specifically for the wmp, and now after an hour total of usage, I have no wmp, no holder for new hand piece, and out a bunch of money for tips. Can't tell you how much I regret not going with Hakko or metcal

Soldering was one of my least favorite activities. I always had a typical soldering iron with no temp control which even the smallest tip was much larger than what I should be using for the components I was working with. I'd wait what felt like a minute for the iron to heat up and then it would cool right down after doing the simplest joint. The solder would inevitably turn dull, be too large such that I'd short two pins and I always risked cooking the component.

The change to the WD1001 was dramatic. The iron itself is really thin and stays cool to the touch. The tip is tiny, heats up in ~12 seconds, and leaves a shinny dot rather than a dull blob. However, the most important part is that the tip is small and precise enough that I didn't have to do any rework. A simple project that I've done a dozen times before was done in half the time.

Being able to set the temp let me follow the component specs so I wouldn't accidentally cook it if I just took a little too long with the more traditional hobbyist iron.

A pro may want a more sophisticated station with a better iron, however this is an outstanding improvement for an active hobbyist.

This is a really awesome soldering station! Works great, heats up super fast. Auto standby at lower temp and after that auto shut off, so it doesn't stay on accidentally for days. Shutoff time and stby temp are customizable, I like that. Very small tip works great on micro projects and smd soldering.
Points for improvement: push-on switch instead of rocker switch and lighted display.
