The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals is the most important bibliographic reference work on 43 key nineteenth century British periodicals ever created or conceived. In its coverage of literature, religion, politics, social sciences, political economy, the arts and women's writing, the Wellesley Index is indispensable for any study of the nineteenth century. In a period when the bulk of published articles were anonymous, the Index identifies over 90% of authors making it an essential research tool.
The benefits of an electronic version:
* The availability of an electronic Wellesley means that users can now search among this wealth of information by date, author, title and other criteria with ease.
* This CD-ROM incorporates extensive corrections and additions to the print edition including material published in the Victorian Periodicals Review
* The majority of the periodicals in the Index are not available in any other electronic bibliographic index.
* Includes extra periodicals not included in the print edition.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The Wellesley Index has long been a valuable research tool in print (Univ. of Toronto, 1966-89). This CD-ROM improves over the print set mainly by offering Boolean and proximity searching of all the periodicals in the database (a total of 45, two more than in the printed version, The Eclectic Review and The Foreign Review having been added to the original 43 titles indexed in print). Other journals indexed include The Contemporary Review, The Edinburgh Review, Macmillan's Review, Longman's Review, and The Rambler. In addition to the ability to search all titles simultaneously (or individually) by article keyword, author, and year, you can browse by periodical, contributor, pseudonym, abbreviations, and short titles and follow up on extensive internal hypertext links. This disc also incorporates nearly 2000 corrections made to the printed version's records. The Bottom Line: An essential resource for academic libraries and public libraries with strong Victoriana collections. Highly recommendedAEd Tallent, Research Instruction, Harvard Coll. Lib.

Review

'An essential resource for academic libraries and public libraries with strong Victoriana collections. Highly recommended. ' - Library Journal

'[The Wellesley Index] has been ripe for simplification through a well-designed CD-ROM. This is it!...Adds convenience, power, clarity, and improved content over the reliable and essential print index.' - Rettig on Reference

'Any student of Victorian British literature, culture, history, religion, politics, or society knows the value and the essential position of the Wellelsey Index. This improved CD-ROM version of that standard tool will make their work easier and more rewarding.' - Rettig on Reference

Reviews of the print edition:'A major bibliographic undertaking. Every library with an interest in nineteenth-century studies should purchase the whole set.' - Literary Quarterly

'It is now impossible to think of Victorian periodical and historical studies without the benefit of [The Wellesley Index]. This is a very remarkable achievement indeed.' - Times Literary Supplement

'Seldom has a scholarly work met with such instant and universal acclaim ... a set of volumes whose indispensability is beyond question.' - Journal of English and Germanic Philology

'The Wellesley Index is simply a great work of reference, probably the most important aid to literary research since the Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature ... it will change the whole nature of Victorian studies.' - New Statesman
