This review is from: Wellington: The Iron Duke (Military Profiles) (Paperback)
Veteran military historian Philip Haythornwaite does the honors in this 2007 Potomac's Military Profiles of "Wellington: The Iron Duke." The author sketches Arthur Wellesley's long apprenticeship in arms, from a first expedition to northwest Europe to his early successes in India, then transitions to the campaigns of the mature general of the Peninsular War in Portugal and Spain. For Haythornwaite, the climax of Wellington's military career is of course his showdown with Napoleon at the decisive Battle of Waterloo.
Haythornwaite goes the extra mile to outline the Duke's long and often uneven career in British politics after Waterloo. Wellington's superb attributes as a commander translated poorly into politics, but he served twice as Prime Minister and carved out a reputation as an honored senior advisor to a series of monarchs and governments. Along the way, Haythornwaite manages to work in a surprisingly nuanced portrait of a complicated man. "Wellington: The Iron Duke" is very highly recommended as a concise and even-handed introduction to one of history's outstanding miliary leaders. |
