Book Description

January 30, 2007
"When Denver officials were discussing naming a new city building in my honor, a newspaper editor asked why I was concerned about my legacy. I grew up in a time when there were no history books about the contributions of African Americans. The only books I could find when I was preparing to teach a Black Studies program included misrepresentations of blacks being happy as slaves on Southern plantations or sociology books. This is my perspective of growing up and beating the odds of illness, a dysfunctional family and personal tragedy. The biggest compliment I receive is when Denver residents say I helped make the Mile High City a better place to live. After every mayoral election, we held up signs on busy downtown streets thanking the voters for electing me. In some ways, this book is my sign thanking my wife, Wilma, our children, family and friends for their love and support. There's an old rural saying that if you see a frog on a fence post he likely didn't get there alone. The same is true for me." --Wellington Webb
