Find Peace in Troubled Times,
By A Customer
This review is from: Wellsprings: A Book of Spiritual Exercises (Paperback)
Anthony DeMello is superb in his manor of helping the reader find the lost, confused and at times sad individual and transporting him or her to a place of peace and tranquility. Wellsprings offers many short medition exercises. I really enjoy the contempletive peacefulness that is awakened with each essay that is SLOWLY read and concentrated upon. I take with me everywhere I go. Even though I have only owned it for a short time, it has the appearence of being decades old. I really have made it looked LOVED. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and still do

Anthony DeMello actually was able to bring eastern mysticism and methods of meditation, into the Vatican and teach it to the jesuits! If you know anything about catholic hirarchy, that is quiet a feet. But once you read this, one of my favorots, or other books by Fr. DeMello you'll see that what he says and teaches is so pure, innocent, true, relevant, and REAL, that you see why he recieved such a wide audiance. I loved working the exercises in his book. Not from a Catholic point of view, but from a Meditatiors position. I read his books often when I need to refocus. Enjoy :-)

After ending the year of 2004 re-reading deMello stories from the Song of the Bird I picked up WELLSPRINGS to compare them! My eyes were first caught by "The Fountain, "The Education and "The Current. "The Education focused upon Peter's Betrayal when he saw that 'Look' from Jesus! "I shrink, at first from his loving gaze, for it is too forgiving... I must sustain that look if I am to learn to look at other people the way he looks at me."
Then I moved back into the deMello section on his Topic of LIFE. First I centered upon "The Awakening, "The Deliverance, and "The Symphony" all really interested me for their under-lining! Since Tony deMello often did in his short life, he meditated upon his own Death! In "Deliverance" an underlined phrase: "And so it must be: Life must go on." On closing of this longer meditation, I added the quotation from my old friend, Bob Farrall: "Until my Brother died - I did not face my mortality!" Many stars & pluses for Contemplation & Meditation in-telling stories. Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

This book is both simplistic and profound! Each time I complete an exercise I discover another jewel. All topics are universal. I set aside time daily to devour at least one reading. You can spend a great deal of time reflecting upon one reading. The readings are thought provoking. It's an excellent resource for those who are just beginning their faith journey, and for those who have been on their journey for some time.
I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking a higher level of both self awareness, and the awareness of the presence of Christ in everyday life. DRW

I can't reccomend this book highly enough. In his usual fashion, Anthony DeMello takes his readers on a deep and profound spiritual journey through a series of 1-2 page spiritual exercises. MUST HAVE!! (Just make sure you devote the time to these pages to get maximum benefit, it is contemplative and rich if you give it a chance)

A nice book to ponder over. Not to take much in one time but rather in small doses taken daily.

The Water of True Life,
By Davis Aujourd'hui (Upstate NY, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wellsprings: A Book of Spiritual Exercises (Paperback)
As the author of the spiritually-themed book, [...], I am always on the outlook for books that feed my spirit. This is definitely one of them.
I was introduced to this book when I first came into recovery from alcoholism, over twenty years ago. I had just come to embrace that God could do for me what I could not do for myself. Prior to that time, I had become alienated from my Christian roots. This book opened up my eyes in ways I never would have believed. Anthony DeMello was a Christian mystic who taught his students how to develop a personal relationship with God. This book laid the groundwork for me in order to do that. I cannot begin to tell you how this transformed my life and my relationship with Jesus. This book is filled with wonderful meditations and visualizations that will help someone find the connection that their soul is thirsting for. Once you have read it, you will want to read his others. I own most of them and they are powerful! He is one of my favorite spiritual authors. If you like Eckhardt Tolle or Deepak Chopra, you will love Anthony DeMello. He opens doors for people who have become stuck upon theology and have come up empty. Through this book, he provides a key that will open the door to your relationship with the Holy Spirit. This is a great resource for meditation and centering oneself. It is an aid rather than an end for spiritual exploration. Some of the exercises are more useful than others but all are worthwhile.

Along with this Book, Anthony de Mello also has Audio & Film Programs. For Contemplation, there is "A Way to God for Today" a Film of de Mello speaking about Silence, Peace, Freedom, Love.
De Mello also allowed one full-length Conference to be recorded "Wake Up to Life," audio CD. In this, he will take about the "I" -- the Observer. He is with a Live Audience taking questions also. Possibly Transormational . . . a Universal Message.

A conversation with your body,

My favorite meditation is "The Vessel" in which de Mello invites you to have a conversation with your body. He asks your body to say what it resents and even fears about you. He asks you to respond with how you feel about your body and then to continue the conversation.
He ask you what it means to you to know that your body is The Body of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. What would it be like to treat your body as being the body of your beloved? He asks you to listen as your body speaks some words of wisdom and to listen to what Jesus has to say to your body. This meditation changed the querulous, annoyed, ashamed attitude I had towards my body. The transformation in attitude is typical of what is achieved by Anthony de Mello's meditations. They are so enjoyable and so rich spiritually. I'm so glad I found this book. |
