From the Inside Flap
Amy and Emily were holding hands. Their eyes were locked tight in intense concentration. Their tiny shoulders rose and fell in time with their rapid breathing. All of a sudden, dozens, then quickly hundreds, of ladybugs began to fly around the roof opening. More and more followed, until the air and ground were thick with them. Gideon watched the infestation in amazement, wondering where all these beautiful insects had come from. The little red-and-black bugs were everywhere -- in the air, on the ground, crawling all over them -- but not a single one landed on the girls. It was as if they were attracted to the twins by some ethereal force but at the same time were unable to light upon them. Doctor Sossoman looked up at Gideon. Hope filled her teary eyes. Charlie was smiling from ear to ear. Reyes could scarcely believe her eyes. "Be prepared," Sossoman said, her tone ominous. "I don't know what, or when, or how, but be prepared for what is about to happen." Sossoman made the sign of the cross across her breast. She whispered, "God bless anyone caught up in their wish. They are simply children. They don't know what they are about to cause."
