A book for Cardigans, Too! (The Corgis with a tail...),

This review is from: Welsh Corgis: Pembroke and Cardigan (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This is a very good book for the aspiring Corgi owner. It covers the general dog basics very well, with special attention to finding a breeder, training and caring for your new dog. In addition, the sections of the book relating to Corgis, both Pembroke AND Cardigan, are worth their weight in gold! There are differences between the breeds, and the authors do a terrific job of highlighting them for the prospective owner. Additionally, the entire book is peppered with special hints about Corgis and pictures of both breeds are used throughout the book to illustrate points being made. This is marked contrast to many other breed-specific volumes, which have a few pages identifing the AKC standard for the breed, a page or two on grooming that is specific, with the rest of the book filled with generic information and depicted by all manner of dogs. A book about Corgis should ONLY have pictures of Corgis! The final point is that my 9 year old son read the book cover to cover (something usually reserved only for the Harry Potter series) and now has a greater appreciation for the soon-to-be new addition to our family. A great book for the entire family!

If you already are familiar with the corgi breed, you'll love this book because it's filled with marvelously appealing photos of corgi puppies! There's an unusual number of great photos, unusual even for a book about the breed. The book also is right on the money with advice on how to raise your corgi to avoid behavior problems. These are working dogs, and if they are trained properly (and it's easy) they are a delight, but without that training they can dominate the household and be a real nuisanced. It's clear that the author knows a lot about the breed. Most dog books are about dogs in general, with little about the particular breed. You get the impression that there's a general dog book on the word processor that's customized slightly for each breed. This is a book about corgis, written to be just about corgis, and full of great information that's useful for every corgi owner.

Not Everything I Was Hoping For,
By "dteggen" (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Welsh Corgis: Pembroke and Cardigan (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This book was informative on generally on how to care for, train and breed a dog. It explained the history and physical traits of the two Corgis, and had many great photos. My main problem with the book is that it did not go into details of the behavior and personality of Corgis. Already being the owner of a Pembroke, my hope for this kind of information was my main motive for buying this book. Overall, this seemed more like a book about dog care with some Corgi topics included rather than a book devoted to Corgi specifics. Still, the price is reasonable, and the book easy to read and reference. If you are a new owner of a Corgi, or looking to get one, without any dog info book yet, you should be satisfied with this. But, if you are looking to get a more detailed account of Corgi personality and ability, you may not be. I have not read any of the other Corgi books, so can not compare.

A great guide when considering a Corgi Purchase!,

My family recently had the opportunity to purchase a Welsh Corgi Cardigan. We had never owned a dog and this book served as a guide in deciding if this breed was the correct fit for our family. It covers what to expect of the breed, how to groom a Corgi and what training is needed. We were able to determine that this was the perfect breed! We purchased "Tango" and have been very pleased! A great book for Corgi owners as well as potential owners.

Lots of corgi-specific Info,

The problem with many dog-related books is that they contain a few dozen pages related to the breed & the rest is filled with generic information that pertains to all breeds. This book in particular deals with corgis the whole way through. A great deal of helpful information concerning corgis appears within.

We purchased this book to help us learn more about Corgis, as we were pretty sure we wanted to add a Corgi to our family. This is a concise book, with much Corgi-specific info (though the requisite all-dog info sneaks in, too). Great photos. Showed it to a breeder, and she liked it a lot, too.

I found the book very interesting especially the section about understanding the corgi personality. Unfortunately, it seemed to be more about the Pembroke when the dog I am researching is the Cardigan. The photos are wonderful, especially the puppies.

This is an excellent little book. It contains solid information from an expert source. It is priced within the reach of all Corgi owners and does the breed a great service by debunking the myth that the Pembroke and Cardigan do not share the same roots. It is a must for all Corgi owners or potential owners.

The pictures were nice and the book contained good, general information on Corgis but didn't get into much depth. I had questions that were left unanswered. It's a nice overview, but not enough detail for my purposes. I ended up getting Pembroke Welsh Corgi by Susan M. Ewing. I highly recommend this book, it was clear, specific and detailed. Got a whole lot from the chapter on types of dog food. Incorporated the information for my two Corgis. It was very helpful for my son's Austrian Shepherd, because she has allergies and this pointed us in the right direction.
