Must Have!, November 19, 2009
This review is from: Welte-Mignon: Its Music and Musicians (Hardcover)
This work is the result of 20+ years of research by Charles Smith. He died before finished & Dick Howe completed it. I second Spencer's observation that it is the primary source of information of the Welte Mignon, both from a roll information point of view, but also the detailed History of the man & the idea, from concept to demise.
Some roll information is lacking, specifically the ones issued in the early years in Germany & not offered for sale in America. However, the German Welte Mignon comprehensive roll catalog has recently become available & combined with this work, is a complete listing of all rolls issued.
For Welte Mignon piano owners, those interested in automatic musical instruments, & history buffs desiring a glimpse into the musical world of the turn of the century, it is a treasure trove of people, places & ideas.
