Book Description

September 1991 6 and up
After watching a horror movie on TV, Jonathan decides he wants to be a vampire. He dresses up in a cape, puts salad oil on his hair, and even wears fangs to school. This amusing tale will have young readers in stitches, while easing any fears of "things that go bump in the night."

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-- Vintage Pinkwater. A round-faced hero, three wempires who have a strong resemblance to the author, a conversational narrative, and wonderful Yiddish phrasing--all bear the mark of the creator of Yobgorgle, the Snarkout boys, and the second-grade werewolf. This plot concerns a boy who watches a vampire movie and decides to become one. He dresses up in a costume (made by his mother) and proceeds to terrify his little sister and his schoolmates. Three wempires visit at midnight, and fortunately do not like to drink blood but much prefer ginger ale, cold chicken, and sardine and onion sandwiches; when the narrator's mother discovers the mess they have made in her kitchen, she throws them out. No matter--our hero will continue to enjoy his vampire existence. The deceptively simple illustrations are cleverly designed, well placed, and add much humor. It is the writing, however, that provides the chuckles and demonstrates Pinkwater's continued zaniness. A volume for all would-be vampires. --Suzanne Wolfe, formerly at Shady Side Academy Junior School, Pittsburgh

This is a really really really funny book. Really. There are not that many books that will make an adult and a child snort milk out their noses, but this is one.

It is also a very useful book to defuse any bedtime terror left over from inappropriate television viewing. If your child is scared of vampires, this book will make it better.

My 2 and 4 year old grandsons love this and zing one liners from it at me all the time. This and Where the Wild Things Are are their favorites.

As for adults, I think that the kid in the story is a lot like many of us were, so we can see ourselves doing the things he does. It takes us back to a childhood we either had or wish we had.
