5.0 out of 5 stars A must have!, September 19, 2002

Team, this one you must have. It will blow you off the planet. IF you can imagine a blend of Dead Can Dance/ Lisa Gerrard Vocals, and combine that with infectous World music and dance sounds (difficult I know) you have an idea. Maybe Dead Can Dance meets Collide? I know, difficult to imagine, but tis a quite unique album unlike anything I have heard before. I guess you would almost call it dance music ( i hesitate to say) but you will never hear anything like this in a club. Basically I have run out of adjectives to describe just how good this is.

The lead singer and mind behind this has a delectable throaty voice, with a wide range. The composition is extraordinary, and has a lovely swirling mix. Absolute stand out tracks are "Radio India" and "salomes Dream".

Awesome. Thanks to the Amazon reviwers who suggested this - you did not lie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mood music for dark times, February 25, 2001

This review is from: Wench (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after hearing one of the group's songs on the "Music from the Succubus Club" compilation soundtrack. "Wench" is the best of the five groups I bought albums from based on songs from that compilation. I keep listening over and over again. It seems to have a light gothic flavor to it. Your can hear the emotions coming from the singers as it is playing. To top it off I can think of no bad songs on the album. With over 1300 CDs in my collection, as of writing this, it remains in my top five percent for over 6 months now. Closest comparisons would be "Rose Chronicles", "Nosferatu", and possibly "Type O Negative", but Wench have a style slightly unique. I highly recmmend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, October 1, 2000

Great stuff. The vocal is often ethereal, haunting, over a mix of industrial sound and tribal percussion. I consistently find myself turning the volume waaaay up on 'Chant','Radio India', 'Tantra', and 'Voodoo'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The dead CAN dance, October 23, 1999

Comparing one band to another is perhaps the best way I can describe unearthly beauty in a world of darkness. Think Dead Can Dance with a little more electronics and more haunting rather than heavenly female vocals. Yes, this is danceable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Indie/Gothic/Dance album, June 6, 2000
This review is from: Wench (Audio CD)
A great mix of industrial sounds, indian music and chants, and dance beats. It's like Dead Can Dance with a more techno sound. I would definately recommend this album whether you like Gothic or even just good dance music. Every song is unique and interesting. The best track, I think, is Radio India.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most impressive gothic debut of 1999, May 4, 2000

When the stellar, haunting vocals of Wench first wash over you, inevitable comparisons to Lisa Gerrard stir up around you. But the fact that Frances Byrne writes exquisite lyrics, and laces her works with ingenious dark dance rhythms you've never heard before, sends this totally over the top. The dance hit that is coming from this CD is Radio India in most places, but it is Jewel that will send you into sorrowful, ecstatic bliss. The rest of the CD, although a few of the songs are bereft of high points, is beautiful, engaging, and astounding. If you love Dead Can Dance, Delerium, The Changelings, or Anka (Xymox), you owe it to yourself to try this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite album - ever., April 22, 2007
This review is from: Wench (Audio CD)
I was lucky enough to get not one, but two copies of this album (I gave one away to my best friend). This is dark faerie music at its finest. I strongly disagree with the $99. price tag I see above, but then again, this album has become a rarity. The songs were created and recorded by Frances Byrne, a true modern goddess without par. She even had a "Wench Wear" clothing collection for a time attached to her site back at the end of the 90's but sadly both the clothing line and the website have disappeared into the ether. It seems the domain [wenchmusic] has been hijacked by link-farm, which is too bad. This album, *if* you can find it is all that seems left of the band that was. They rarely toured outside of San Francisco. The sound is tribal, electronica, Middle Eastern, gothic, and so sensual it would melt the vinyl if it were ever 'laid to wax' (put on an LP). This ethereal CD is what Morticia Addams' siren song would have been to Gomez. This is 42 minutes of musical perfection that should always be played in its entirety, and in the order Frances bequeathed them to us, but unfortunately mypod shuffles them around a bit (I had the foresight to back up my scratched and seriously overplayed CD in time).

We can only wait to see if Frances resurfaces, for the net is showing no news of her over the last 6 years. Perhaps, like the Tuatha she has abandoned us to the realms, but at least they left 4 great gifts behind. She has only left us two. If you ever find this album - buy it. If you find two copies, the second one is mine.
