5.0 out of 5 stars Playful and profound, October 8, 2009

This review is from: Wendy Evans Joseph Pop Up Architecture (Hardcover)
The joy of experiencing great architecture is captured in this intriguing monograph highlighting several recent projects of Wendy Evans Joseph through the clever use of pop ups, dissolves, inserts and slides. Joseph showcases the broad range of her talents, ranging from residential structures like a home observatory and writer's studio to public projects such as a pedestrian bridge and holocaust memorial garden. Each project manages to convey the drama of the structure's form with the subtlety of Joseph's design to capture the excitement of the architect's distinctive style. The pop ups are detailed and true to the form, even managing to capture the play of light and shadow on the structures. Unlike many pop up books, great attention has been paid to specific details in each image, such as capturing the fire in the fireplace of the writer's studio, or the reflection of light off the dome of the observatory. This is a book that is both playful and profound, that can be enjoyed purely as a work of art for its execution of truly remarkable pop ups as well as a serious study of the challenges of creating distinctive architecture. This delightful book has found a way of presenting architecture that can be enjoyed by the non-professional while still providing the serious professional with enough details to be satisfying. It is hard to imagine ever going back to looking at architecture in two-dimensions again.
