5.0 out of 5 stars Durable. Stylish. Zips like a champ, November 23, 2008
This review is from: SwissGear Computer Backpack (Blue) (Personal Computers)
After owning other, more expensive laptop backpacks, I can say this one is definitely my favorite. The large zippers and thick fabric (which feels like canvas) are both very durable. Additionally, there is a lot of padding to protect my laptop. I did not expect it to be especially stylish based on the online pictures, but I have actually received a few complements. In real-life it's a slightly darker color of blue and less bulky looking.

The extra padding for the laptop has some notable side effects. First, the laptop is stored closest to the body, so if it rains torrentially that may serve as an extra barrier against wetness. On the downside, the bag does not breathe quite as readily as other laptop bags, so you may end up with a sweaty back if you use it for extended periods of time in warmer climates.

Overall I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, November 18, 2008

This backpack is excellent for school!!! The laptop is very well secured inside it. There are A LOT of pockets for gadgets and room for books. It helps you be very organized. It's a little bigger than you would expect from a backpack, but it's very nice.
Very sturdy fabric. I used it only for school for now, not for hiking yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost there, January 5, 2009
This review is from: SwissGear Computer Backpack (Blue) (Personal Computers)
I selected this computer bag based on brand name, dimensions, functionality, color, and last of all price (being the 2nd most important factor behind brand name). The product description, including dimensions, stated that it could accommodate up to and including a 17" laptop/notebook computer. Prior to placing the order, I measured my computer to see if it would fit within the stated dimensions. My careful measurements revealed that it should/would fit in the bag. After the shipment arrived, I carefully examined the product for quality assurance and features offered. My examination confirmed the quality SwissGear is known for. There are plenty of pockets to hold most, if not all of the typical computer accessories. There are plenty of zippers to allow easy access to all of the interior features. The high density foam padding, surrounding the computer is adequate. I did notice there is some room to add additional padding, if the user so desires. All in all a fine computer backpack.

However, there are two areas that are lacking: the water-bottle pocket will only accommodate only a small bottle (e.g. 16oz - 20 oz). For those of us that are extra thirsty or big drinkers, you are out of luck. Second, when I tried to place my computer in the bag, I discovered that my unit was 1 inch to long for the protective sleeve. So I was left with a decision; return and order a larger computer bag, or make do with what I had.

I decided to keep the backpack and make some extremely minor modifications, so my computer will fit in the bag. Other than my computer being 1" too long, I would highly recommend this computer bag to anyone.

I have an Alienware M15x, which is huge for a 15 inch screen. It fits snugly in this bag. I don't have to jam it in but there is not much extra space in the laptop area. Outside of the laptop area are lots of pockets and zippered spaces to keep things organized and easy to get at. The only thing I wish it had was a pocket for airline tickets. The front top pockets are good for passport, reading glasses, a flashlight and other small things used when traveling. The other pockets can hold anything else, cords, power supply, pens, keys, etc.. There's a space for everything for school or travel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pretty decent backpack, January 4, 2010

This review is from: SwissGear Computer Backpack (Blue) (Personal Computers)
As a college student a good backpack is an absolute necessity. I have used this backpack for three months now to carry my laptop, books, and other stuff that a regular student would need throughout the day. It seems to work quite well though it has it's downfalls in certain areas.

So here is a rundown of the good:
-lots of compartments and zippers
-nice dark blue color
-lots of padding on the back
-has a very sturdy handle on top
-very sturdy/semi-water resistant fabric(Took it through heavy rain multiple times and the stuff inside
was dry though the outer fabric of the backpack was a bit wet)
-the compartment on the strap for a swiss army knife is quite useful if you have a small
phone(an iPhone would definitely not fit)

Here is a rundown of the bad(a description of why I think so will be below):
-needs more padding on the shoulders
-needs a larger water bottle holder
-quite heavy by itself
-needs a separator for the main two compartments
-not very breathable

The backpack as listed above is quite heavy by itself and could use more padding on the shoulders to help balance that out. The two water bottle holders are quite small which worries me every time I need to put a Sobe in there. In fact, the holders are barely enough to hold my .4L Sigg bottle in place. As for the two main compartments there is a seperator present though the seperator does not complete separate the two compartments and leaves enough room between the two for it to be a problem. I don't see myself as a really messy person, but if you happen to have any loose papers inside with your other stuff, even for just a short walk down the block, be prepared to find them crinkled or torn between the two compartments. Additionally, if you have any spiral notebooks or anything of the sort in there be prepared to find them partially sliding between the compartments and even slightly damaged depending on if you have some heavy textbooks in there. If you plan on using this backpack in warm weather or for hikes you might find yourself with quite a bit of sweat on your back, since the backpack adds head with the extra padding on the back and does not breathe very well.

Overall this backpack is fit to do it's job and is better than your usual JanSport backpack, but it is definitely not worth anywhere near the $100 price it is listed at now. There are better backpacks out there if your willing to pay in the $100 range that this backpack is listed under. However, if you happen to find this backpack for somewhere around $45 then I would definitely buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bulky, Strong and a tight fit for your cell, August 7, 2009

This backpack reminded me of a large, expensive car. It has plenty of pockets, and a good amount of space for your books, laptop and gadgets. The backpack has two large pockets, poorly separated. Occasionally, this feature became a problem as small items would roll under the separator and into the other compartment. This product is very durable, with large, well made zippers. One issue I had was with the cell phone pocket on the shoulder strap. The pocket was small, which sometimes made it hard to remove and insert the cell phone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality bag, but too big, March 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SwissGear Computer Backpack (Blue) (Personal Computers)
This is a well-made, nice looking bag with lots of protection for a laptop. But make sure it's the size you're looking for. This bag is very big and as a petite woman, I look silly carrying it (not to mention when stuffed full, it's way too heavy to be practical). If you want a big bag to carry lots of stuff, this is it. But if you want something a bit smaller and lighter, then this isn't for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality and Affordability, September 17, 2009

My three teenagers have used SwissGear backpacks for years. Even after heavy everyday use, the backpacks still look like new. (I even pop them into the washer and freshen the packs up from time to time.) My oldest son recently started college, and he needed a pack with a padded section for his laptop. This computer backpack was a fantastic price and bargain for the quality and workmanship involved. It is a bit heavy, but my son is used to carrying large loads of books. So that is not a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice backpack, September 11, 2009
This review is from: SwissGear Computer Backpack (Blue) (Personal Computers)
As I really wanted Royal blue one, this one is still a good one.

Plenty of pockets, comfortable fit, big enough for all my gadgets and sturdy make.
My 15.4 inch laptop sticks out little more than 1 inch from the laptop pocket which is OK for me as my backpack usually travels in the backseat. Swiss knife pocket is a good fit for my hiking knife which is bigger than usual Swiss knife.

Excellent backpack!

I am very pleased with the Swiss Gear backpack. I had a Dell backpack for my previous Dell laptop and that backpack started to fall apart almost immediately after I started to use it. The Swiss Gear backpack is holding up very well. I use it almost every day of the week. The backpack is comfortable to wear and the weight is well distributed.
