2.0 out of 5 stars Poor zipper; Outer shell is not water-resistant
I like this sleeping bag because it's roomy, big and bulky, and very warm in heavy frost weather as long as it is very dry.

I dislike the zipper that snags repeatedly. My son's 40° Coleman bag has a better zipper and lining material that does not snag. Also, as a cold-weather bag, you're going to get condensation and frost inside your tent. Any moisture...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great bag, August 8, 2006
This review is from: Wenzel Tundra Oversize Hollow Core -10-Degree Sleeping Bag with Hood (Sports)
About two years ago, I bought a Wenzel +25 degree oversize bag and fell in love with it the first night because of the comfort and roominess inside. I have been wanting a mate to it that could go to lower temperatures in the early spring and fall and decided to try this bag.

This bag has quite a bit more padding in it than my older bag and is like climbing into a fluffy cloud that wraps around you and I have slept in 30 degree temps in complete comfort. This is one of the most comfortable bags I have ever slept in.

The zipper is double ended so you can unzip the bottom to let the feet breathe in warmer weather and still have the side zipped up. There is a velcro strap that goes above the zipper that holds the two halves of the bag together so that if you do a lot of turning in the night like I do, the zipper won't come unzipped. Very nice feature that I wish was on my other bag. There is also a fairly large padded strip behind the zipper that does a good job of keeping the cold from coming in through the zipper.

The large hood has a drawstring on it so that you can close it in around your face similar to a mummy bag.

One of the big things for me is the size of the bag. I am 6'3" tall and 210 lbs and I really love the room this bag has to offer both in length and width. I have plenty of room for my feet and I can turn over with ease.

The outside cover is a cotton like material that grips the flocked top of my air mattress and prevents the bag from sliding off in the middle of the night even with a lot of tossing and turning. This was a real problem for me with another bag I had that had a nylon covering.

All in all after having a number of trips with this bag this summer in a wide range of temps I haven't found any cons to this bag other than not wanting to get out of it in the morning.

UPDATE: Nov 2, 2010
After 4 years, I am still enjoying this bag and it is holding up very well and better than I expected. I tent camp in the 9,000 - 11,000 foot altitudes about 15 nights a year where the morning temps can get down to about freezing in the mornings. I use a 2 inch foam pad on top of my air mattress and that helps to insulate me from the cold air in the air mattress. If I wear sweat pants and shirt I keep warm down to about 25 degrees. If you flip the bag so the hood is on top it will cover your head quite well and help keep the heat in and your head warm. I am expecting to get another 4 or 5 years out of this fine bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm and dry, July 3, 2006

I have taken this sleeping bag camping in cool weather (40 deg F) and in warm weather (70 deg F). The zipper works smoothly, and while a little attention has to be paid to keep it from catching the edges of the bag, it does not snag and tear like some other sleeping bags I have owned. The material is soft and when used in conjuntion with a self-inflating mat, is very comfortable.

While camping in a torrential downpour, one of the walls on my tent let in a stream of water, which made a small river on the floor of the tent. The water ran right under the sleeping bag, soaking the bottom of it by my feet. I did not notice there was a problem until I got up in the morning. The inside of the sleeping bag stayed dry. That's a first in a sleeping bag for me.

Any moisture that drips onto the outer shell of the bag soaks in, because the shell is not water-resistant. This bag has to be taken outside and dried out every day of the camping trip.

Edit> I came back to revise this review because I realize that outdoor camping and tent camping are not everyone's cup of tea. This would be a perfect sleeping bag for staying in an unheated cabin or RV, where there is no chance of the bag getting damp. It's also thick enough that it needs little padding (if any) underneath.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you fall in love with a sleeping bag?, August 3, 2007

I know that idea sounds kind of silly, but this is an awesome sleeping bag. I first bought a Wenzel Timberwolf from Amazon- it was roomy, but the fabric liner was stiff and somewhat scratchy and featured timberwolf images from your worst nightmares. I replaced it with this sleeping bag. This sleeping bag also has a generous amount of room. The lining is a soft, comforting flannel. It has a lot of filling- enough so that when I am in it, I feel like I am surrounded by a warm soft cloud. I understand why another reviewer didn't want to get out of this bag in the morning! This sleeping bag compares well with the most comfortable bedding I have been in- matching that offered by fine hotels. The pocket for personal effects toward the bottom is useful, if a bit small. If I was going to find fault with this bag, it would be about pulling up the zipper- which another reviewer also mentioned. I believe this happens because the zipper is offset from the edge of the bag, creating better insulation. It tends to grab fabric when you zip- but this is really a small fault. I love this sleeping bag for its warm and comfort. I am 5'8 and this is the right length bag for me. A significantly taller person may want to consider the length of the bag in making their decision. This would be a good bag for camping close to your vehicle. The bag is too big and heavy to be practical for backpacking. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice bag, roomy and warm to the core! Except the zipper drove me nuts!, November 22, 2006

This bag being oversized fit me well and I'm a short, wide type! Kept me warm down to zero. My only problem with this bag is the zipper. They used a small plastic zipper instead of one of the bigger styles and it kept getting the sleeping bag stuck in it so it wouldn't zip up or down easily. Seemed like it happened every time! Mabey it was just me?? This was the only negative I could find with this bag, Other than the zipper it was a very warm and comfortable bag.

This is a HOT bag. No worries about keeping warm. After a few minutes in it, it begins to feel like an electric blanket. It is BIG though, so not good for hiking
it very far. I use it as a Cot Pad in the summer months. Love the zipper at the feet, main reason for buying it. You can open the bottom to let your feet get some air.

3.0 out of 5 stars too short!, December 21, 2008
This review is from: Wenzel Tundra Oversize Hollow Core -10-Degree Sleeping Bag with Hood (Sports)
The bag is a decent overall product, however it is too short for me. I'm 6'1" and the tops of my shoulders hang out of the bag and I hate that. I bought the thing because it was oversized and I thought that meant it would fit me. I think the product says 78 inches or something like that, but I think that is the length with the hooded oval part at the top. If your about 5'10" or less I'd say go for it, or if you don't care if your shoulders get cold.

My son and I each had one of these bags on a two-day car campout. The temperature went into the low 20's. We both agreed that it kept us crazy warm and neither of us wanted to get out of our bags in the morning. The pull string on the hood is a very nice feature that you can open and close, depending on how chilly you feel. I found the bag to be a bit too long for me, as I am only 5'5". There was some "dead air" space at the bottom of the bag, but the bag is so warm and thick overall, that the airspace wasn't chilly. Since the bag is so large and heavy, be aware that it takes more space to store it than a regular bag. My only real complaint is that the zipper drove me crazy getting caught in the liner. I had to zip a few inches, pull the liner out of the zipper and repeat the process over and over, in order to zip up the bag. At no time did it seem that the zipper was going to break. Since this seems to be a common problem with sleeping bags, that alone would not keep me from recommending it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!, August 27, 2011

I used my new Wenzel bag last weekend for the first time and was very impressed. Overnight low was about 63 so I will need to wait a few months to test for temp. For those of us that are very tall (6+feet tall) this bag is perfect. For those of us that like/need to bend just one leg while sleeping than this bag is perfect. The lining makes for a very warm sleep and I love the hood draw cord, it kept my pillow right in place all night. Oh and that velcro strap is great too, I hate when those zippers slide open when you toss and turn durring the night but, not with my Wenzel! This extra wide bag is worth every penny!
