Just like the 1/4 inch zyklop, which I've been using for six months, this 1/2 inch zyklop has quickly become the one I pick up first every time.

It seems quirkier in this larger size - the handle feels odd, very ergonomic, soft and good, but odd. The fine tooth action is very nice. The swivel head is nice, and the socket lock has saved a couple sockets from being dropped in precarious locations.

I thought the Zyklp looked short to me when I first pulled it from the box, but I compared it to my SK 1/2 ratchet and they were identical size. I think the colors and handle width make it look stubbier than it really is.

So how does it work? fantastic - really. The grip alone is worth the price. I can't tell you how many times my hands feel bruised after working with a conventional ratchet all day. You can grip this thing tighter than metal ratchet and turn on it harder. It feels very strong too. As part of a recent project, I cranked on this thing very, very hard, and it didn't feel like anything was ready to give away. There is no way to put a cheater on the handle with out destoying it, though, and that's probably a good thing.

I also got it very greasy and dirty, and it cleaned back up to near new pretty easily

Cons:
Like the other zyklops - it's a bit ugly. The green is pretty bright.
The paint chips quickly on the knurled direction switch.
I don't think the plastic sleeve on the neck is very useful in the 1/2 size. In the 1/4 it is great, but on this model it hasn't proved useful yet.

UPDATE: June 2013 - I've had this ratchet for a couple years now, and I notice there are quite a few negative reviews saying it doesn't work right and it's not durable.

I own a 3/8 version and like it but when I received the 1/4 version it had internal ratcheting problems. When you ratcheted the ratchet through a 360 cycle at one point it would snag and require much more force to get it past the snagged/stuck area. The head is thick for a 1/4 ratchet and may prevent you from working in tight areas. Also, the ratchet is German engineered but made in Taiwan, the Wera sockets are also Taiwanese (states that directly on bag they come in.). The socket to drive fit is extremely loose and appears to be mostly the fault of the sockets. My snap on and SK sockets fit much better although still a bit more loose than fitting them to a SK or Snap on ratchet.

As with the 1/4 in. drive ratchet, this is one of best ratchets I have owned so far. The multi-position head works real well in tight areas. The push button release and direction control are also easy to use. The handle fits my hand well. The only complaint I have about this tool (the reason for the 4 stars), is the handle needs to be longer. I would even buy an additional ratchet if Wera made one with the handle 3-4 in. longer. It is possible that Wera has longer ones out there, but I have not seen them yet. Wera makes great, long lasting tools, but are expensive. I have found that if you look around the web, there are some deals out there. Great tool.

Excellent product, you could not expect less from the German engineering

At first I bought this ratchet taking advantage of the discounted price, since I had never heard of this brand. I set out to "investigate" (if you can call it that) in garagejournal.com and elsewhere, coming to the conclusion that this brand produces excellent tools.

A few observations:

The selector is metallic (green color fringes around, cause the feeling that it is plastic). Therefore, no need to worry about scratches or harm caused by friction.

The lock to rotate the head is plastic, however, is irrelevant because it does not take much pressure. In addition, its construction is sturdy.

In terms of design, looks bulky in pictures but once you have in your hands is similar to other ratchets of this type, and it is logical, since the purpose of these ratchets lies in providing better access.

I've always been a fan of brands like Hazet (top quality in my opinion) and Craftsman (balance between quality and price), however, swivel head versions of these brands do not have more than 36 teeth, and in this case the Zyklop has 72.

In terms of maintenance, I used it fully greased and their performance is excellent, on the other hand, it is easy to clean (although it seems difficult)

Regarding performance, the ratchet mechanism feels strong, however, only time will tell me. Although regardless of brand and warranty policies, I have never been in favor of applying excessive force to the ratchets.

For use as a screwdriver, I'm not sure of its usefulness, at least in my case. Maybe recommend the models in 1/4" and 3/8", if required to use this modality.

Made for looks not function. Not easy to switch directions at all. Watch what you clean it with rubber will start peeling. Don't wrench too hard or it will bind up rachet.

Overall, this is probably one of the best 1/4 in. drive ratchets I have owned. The multi-position head works well in tight areas. The push button release and the direction control are easy to use. The handle is comfortable in my hand. The only complaint I have about this ratchet, is the handle could be longer. Other than that, it is a great tool. Wera has a array of extensions available for this ratchet, but my extensions work fine the ratchet. Wera makes excellent tools, but they can be expensive, but I have found them at reduced prices on the internet, so look around before you buy.
