Editorial Reviews

Review

''We're Alive is a modern rendition of an old-school medium. Maintaining a style that is both retro and contemporary, the radio drama will give horror fans the campy, kitschy style they like, but it also provides a variety of characters and development to keep general audiences engaged . . . Despite not being able to see the action, the excitement and intensity is still sustained through score and sound design. In some ways, the lack of visuals to accompany the audio creates more suspense. The narrator controls how much the audience knows, slowly teasing out information. Accompanying the drama are sparse moments of comedic relief . . . Expressing a keen awareness of the zombie subgenre, many of the jokes come from familiar scenarios and tropes of zombie stories.'' --Examiner.com

We're Alive is just wrapping up its second season, and it comes as no surprise that as of this writing, the show has been downloaded over 4 million times. It has garnered several awards, and it's certain that this audio drama juggernaut will continue to pull in more as the story continues. I've been following We're Alive for about a year, and in my opinion each episode just gets better.

It would be easier for me to write this review if I could give just one reason as to what makes this show great, but it is more like a fine dish - it's the combination of all of the ingredients that make it stand out. We're Alive boasts top-notch voice work from a cadre of seasoned actors and actresses. The sound effects are painstakingly crafted and placed, helping to create a more immersive atmosphere. The music that accompanies the story beautifully sets the tone for each high and low the characters face. Binding everything together is an epic story of a group of survivors trying to hold on in what remains of Los Angeles. The characters are expertly written. Because of their realistic portrayal they never have to beg for empathy; they earn it. Mixed in between the action and drama are brilliant doses of comedy to help keep the story fresh and fascinating.

This Season 1 set takes everything I (and hopefully you) loved from the original podcast and remasters it. The commercials are gone, the dialogue has an extra coat of polish applied, and new audio cues have been added. Best of all, the chapters are presented in their entirety, as opposed to the podcast's 3-part chapter format. If you're a zombie enthusiast, you can't go wrong here!

My brother turned me onto "We're Alive". I grew up listening to Radio Mystery Theater as a kid and have always longed to hear somebody revisit the radio thriller again. The folks at Modern Myth do it and do it with style. With a full cast, music and sound effects, they create an exciting and enthralling world that pulls you in and doesn't let go until the last fade out, but leaves you hungry for Season 2.

A brief description of the show: A zombie plague strikes the world and quickly wipes out most of humanity. The radio drama follows a group of survivors as they struggle to survive in Los Angeles as the confront zombies, mutanted super zombies and equally deadly human marauders. There's slam bang action and quiet human drama pulled off by the great cast and excellent music and sound mixing of effects. I would say if you're a fan of "The Walking Dead" you should check it.

My husband told me about this one and I wasn't super enthusiastic about it. I'd already tried out a couple of podcasts and found them to be badly written and performed. So I gave this one a try and woo hoo, it is insanely good, like listening to a movie with sound effects; distant hammering of gunfire, creaky rusted gates opening, the sound of running feet.

I'll admit the first five minutes didn't immediately enthrall me, I stuck with it because I didn't have anything else to listen to and had a skull cracking migraine that made reading impossible and television viewing painful. Listening to an audiobook is a nice, painless way to pass the time waiting for my meds to kick in.

The voice actors really bring the story to life and the differences in their voice and reactions to situations make it easy to differentiate them. They have a really big cast for a podcast and it was pretty amazing to me how real they all sounded considering they are all actors probably sitting in a sound studio somewhere.

Now onto the story, it opens up with Michael Cross, on his way to class. He's in the Army reserve and is using his GI bill to get a degree. He's a bit older than most of the other students and seems a bit apart from them even when something strange starts happening. The first hints that all is falling apart is the reports of rioting and so Michael heads to the base to try and figure out what should be done. He meets up with Angel, an officer who doesn't have much field experience and Saul, a fellow soldier and they quickly decide to break into the armory and head out to find a safe place.

Along the way they pick up some people.

There are very few forms of media that affect me as deeply as this audio drama like this one. Every twinge of foreboding and every whisper of ambient noise adds to the world that Kc Wayland and Shane Salk have added into their creation giving it more breadth then you would think an auditory experience could have. You'll really feel for the characters, both love and hate, which will enthrall you in their "story of survival". Audio quality is top notch with professional voice actors for the majority of the cast. Sound effects are amazing and you'll find yourself wondering how exactly they managed to do that? Once you get your first taste of this show you'll love it. So try out a few which are available as podcasts. Then when you find out how much you truly love this series purchase it to support their efforts!! Just a word of warning, if you try it be prepared to have some free time to listen to it all. You really won't be able to stop, I know I couldn't.
