Something Very New and Very Wild!,
By Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: We're All In This Together (MP3 Download)
Gabby Young begins to fascinate with simply the photo on this Cd cover - a beautiful, glamourous woman with one of those most creative hair arrangements ever photographed. And then once the CD is on the player the surprises continue. Gabby has a classically trained voice that knows every corner of her range and how to get there with finesse and make something entirely new of the trip. Many singers today use gimmicks to get noticed: Gabby Young doesn't need gimmicks - her creativity replaces that. These songs are like few others heard - there are elements of Southern wailing, definite gypsy overtones and manipulation of a spectrum of instruments that is dazzlingly original. The CD title is GABBY YOUNG & OTHER ANIMALS, the 'other animals' being the musicians who accompany her on this musical odyssey. In addition to the vocals, Gabby plays guitar and percussion; Stephen Ellis plays acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, steel drums and melodica ('blow-organ'); Adam Lucas is a percussionist who also provides steel drums, cajon (a box shaped Peruvian instrument), and djembe (a skin covered drum); Jim Hurt is a strong Double Bass; Rosa Conrad plays accordion, keyboards and percussion, Rory Shaw is on trumpet and percussion; Charlie Wren plays clarinet and percussion. That list of assorted instruments gives an idea as to the different sounds that Gabby Young uses to push her songs forward into our space. This is a very strange and wonderful recording, one that the moment it is over begs to be repeated: there is something new and unique discovered with every hearing. Gabby Young is a force of nature - and certainly one of the most gifted experimentalists around these days. Grady Harp, May 11

... and I liked it enough that I thought I should rectify that there was only one review, and that it gave the album only two stars! This is a very nice, chill, jazzy album that's definitely worth checking out! The singer's voice is quiet and smoky.

Ain't No Thing Like the Circus Swing!,

This review is from: We're All in This Together (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite albums of all time! The blend of jazz, blues, folk and big band stylings make this album lively and always intriguing. I've seen Gabby Young and Other Animals in concert many times and they boast one of the best sounds I've ever encountered in a live show, the cabaret meets circus feel of it all makes you want to get up and dance! Great album, amazing artistry.
