More About the Author

P.K. Hallinan began writing children's books 35 years ago when his wife asked him to make a book for their two young sons as a Christmas gift. He did, and the feedback he got from friends and neighbors inspired him to write more books. Since then, P.K. has written and illustrated 89 children's books and has sold more than 8,000,000 copies worldwide.

P.K. was born in Los Angeles in 1944 and spent his youth primarily in Bethesda, Maryland and in the San Fernando Valley. Although P.K. never studied art, his disappointment with the work of the artist assigned to illustrate his first book, motivated him to learn to draw. He has been illustrating his own books ever since.

"If I did any one thing right," says P.K., "I decided very early on to write books that help children and parents alike have better and happier lives. That decision has kept many of my books in-print for more than 25 years, because the values I teach are timeless."

P.K. is also an ordained minister and pastors his own small church, Joy Chapel, in Ashland, Oregon. He lives with his wife, Jeanne, in the mountains above Ashland and also at the beach, in Brookings, Oregon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Father's Day Gift, February 24, 2000
This review is from: We're Very Good Friends My Father (We're Very Good Friends (Paperback Ideals)) (Paperback)
I have a 4 year old son and we gave this book to my husband for his birthday. It has become the most treasured book that they try to read everynight. With all the questionable ideas that kids can see and hear, even in some books, this book was truly refreshing and heart-warming.

My husband enjoyed the book so much that he purchased "We're Very Good Friends My Mother and I" for me for Valentine's Day and "We're Very Good Friends My Sister and I" for our 7 1/2 year old daughter to read to her brother. We also plan on buying the other books the author has written in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reassures our son while his daddy is away from home, May 1, 2005

I purchased this book on the advice of a family counselor because our son (2 1/2 years old) was having a hard time adjusting to his dad (my husband) being gone on deployment with the military. It has been a great aid to get our son talking about his dad and remembering the things they do together like playing ball, going for walks, learning new skills like riding a bike. Remembering all the fun and cool things they do together has helped reassure our son that Daddy still cares and that they'll get to do fun stuff together again when he comes home. Our little guy usually doesn't like new books (he prefers his old, broken-in favorites), but he took to this book immediately and asks to read it every night. There aren't many daddy books available (as opposed to the volumes of mommy books) and this certainly must be one of the best. I especially recommend it for military families who will be separated because it gives a good departure point for discussion with your child about his or her father and what Daddy means to your child.

Also recommended: Daddies Are For Catching Fireflies (our 16-month-old likes this one) and The Very Best Daddy of All (companion to My Mother is Mine).
