Editorial Reviews

So what happens when one of the most exciting young producers around reworks one of the most acclaimed albums from a true legend? The result is Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx's We're New Here which sees Jamie xx re-imagining 13 tracks from the original I'm New Here album sessions. In February 2010, Gil Scott-Heron released I'm New Here, his first album in Meanwhile, the last eighteen months have been meteoric for Jamie xx. His band The xx's self titled debut album (which Jamie produced) received huge acclaim, picking up 2010's prestigious Mercury Music Prize, while Jamie garnered respect for his remixes (in particular of Florence & The Machine's 'You've Got The Love' and more recently Adele's Rolling In The Deep) and solo productions (single 'Far Nearer' on Numbers).

We're New Here combines the best of Gil Scott-Heron's spoken word style with irresistible rhythms and wicked drops. This is a short album, but it packs in some spectacular tracks that flow very nicely together (thanks to the interludes). It's also one of those albums that you can play over and over and pick out different things each time. Because of the intricate dialogue between spoken word and heavy beats, there's always something new to get your head hooked on.

this is an extremely unique record.
i hear similarities to burial. different production, but you still come away with that rainy city street sound, especially "the crutch," "NY is killing me," and "home." if you like smart idm, and all the wonderful blips and pops(ie; the rolling weightless percussion of modeselektor, or anstam) combined with the almost child like altered vocals,(ie; burial, afx) all held together beautifully by trance inducing synth patches,(and of course, gil-scott's tortured baritone) than this is the record you've been searching for.

i have to admit, over the course of the first initial listens, "the crutch" was the standout track that lead me to the rest of the material. doing a remix album well is a rare art-form. there are way more failures than triumphs at this genre. this one's definately a triumph. it may take a week for the songs to lodge themselves firmly in your head, so pick your favorite tracks and they'll lead to the rest of the album.
now, i have to admit that i'm not much of a fan of the xx's, especially compared to jamie xx's new EP that has the incredible "beat for" b-side. in fact, i had no idea jamie xx was related to the xx's. personally i find "zomby" more interesting than "the xx's."

so coming from a guy who had no idea of jamie's, or gil-scott heron's histories or work, i can still confidently say this is one of the most exciting finds i've come across in the last year.(for more testimony to jamie xx's prowess check out "bloom(jamie xx rework part 3)").

I love the combination of Gil Scott Heron's rough-edged voice with Jamie XX's mixing skills. Jamie XX knows how to place the vocals well in his trance-enducing music and for me this is a brilliant partnership. Cutting edge and thought-provoking. 'NY is killing me' is a winner.

I learnt about Gil Scott Heron through his amazing song 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' in the movie 'Hurricane'. I never listened to his discography or gravitated towards this style of music but maintain a liking and respect for his poetic music, as well as for the electronic scene.

I think this is an awesome and creative melding of two different and opposing genres. It's one of my favourite albums. I have not heard the original "I'm New Here", but I'm almost fearful that it can't be as good as this! We're New Here is highly recommended for any music fan. From start to finish, Heron's meanderings melt beautifully against the sometimes energetic, sometimes mellow beats and effects Jamie brings.

If you are looking for something different or new, don't hesitate to try it. I would also recommend the album 'Push the Sky Away' by Nick Cave & the Badseeds, for anyone who likes Heron in general.

This is a really great album and partners so well with "I'm New Here". Neither one is aggresive and they give a similar vibe but this is more electronic and a little faster on the backbeat.

Your soul & mine! Sums up this fantastic collaboration of Gil Scott-Heron's beautiful & eloquent spoken words & Jamie Xx's masterpiece of technical producing skills. Breathtaking, inspiring, transcending, up-lifting....Multiple listens unfolds many layers previously unheard.
