The sudden upheaval of a middle-aged woman's stability gets a character driven, farcical and hilarious spotlight shone on it, pulling out her vulnerability into a personal triumph. Written and directed by Joan Carr-Wiggin, "If I Were You" is the perfect film to showcase the tour de force comedic talent of Marcia Gay Harden (Madelyn).

An unlikely and manipulated friendship begins, quite by happenstance, between Madelyn and her husband Paul's (Joseph Kell) newly discovered mistress. "A bouncing bimbo", Lucy (Leonor Watling), is the office temp involved in the affair who gets caught by Madelyn. Turning up the heat, this heartbroken wife, along with the "Plan B" mistress, join forces to advise each other on what should be done concerning their lives, and concerning Paul. This unholy alliance has a twist here as Lucy does not know that Madelyn is actually Paul's wife. Let the games begin ...

There are so many places in this madcap setup that could have caused this story to sink; subplots, predictable in spots, and keeping the level of comedy above the water. I found myself laughing throughout it all. A scorned and out of character, corporate wife, along with an endless bottle of Scotch, becomes increasingly sarcastic and shrewd. Madelyn had been at a place in her life where she was thinking of a peaceful retirement with Paul and their lives getting to a slower pace. Infidelity then rears its ugly head and pulls the rug right out from under her.

Along with lovely music (Paolo Buonvino) and an indescribable "King Lear", a whole stage play theme is worked in. The tone of condescension amid the characters gets a solid punch in the film's own third act.

I wasn't sure if I should rent this, but Marcia Gay Harden usually picks good scripts, so, I decided to rent this movie. And oh boy, I'm glad that I did. There is something very organic about the script. Marcia Gay's performance is *very* funny at times while honestly portrays the emotions of a compassionate and distraught middle-age career woman who is forced to re-evaluate her life and marriage after she finds out about her husband's love affair. This movie defies the typical Hollywood concept that love affairs and one night stand only belong to men of all ages and emotionally unstable young women, that young women cannot teach anything to wise middle age women, and deals with the reality of many that are clearly under-represtend in Hollywood movies.

Delightful performances, through and through, with poignant and laugh-aloud moments. "If I Were You" is a gem. And, I learned not to trust reviews -- I often go to a movie-review website named after a spoiled vegetable (wait, a spoiled fruit?) before renting a film -- and decide against poorly rated choices. This website gave the film a truly dreadful review and only 67 percent of the audience liked it. So glad I read Amazon readers' reviews and went with them.

Great story. Very well executed. I loved Marcia Gay Harden. She was truly spot on in her portrayal as a woman dealing with it all.

This was a nice little movie that didn't try to be any more than it was. Marcia Gay Harden and Leonor Watling as the wife and mistress respectively were well matched for their roles.

Ms. Harden acts to save a young woman, Ms. Watling, who she rightly thinks is planning suicide. The cause of the young woman's unhappiness is that she was dumped by her lover who is a married man. Later when Ms. Harden finds out the man is her husband she continues her friendship with Ms. Watling without revealing what she knows. There are various comedic twists and turns leading to a satisfactory ending for the two women.

The movie is an amazing treat for anyone who is married, who plans to marry, any wife, any husband any mistress or mistress to be and any husbands who are thinking about having an affair..
This amazing picture shows in a hilarious way the toll that extra martial affairs take on people. All people. Super witty movie.
Both main characters are casted and played to perfection. You got your aging wife who is just so lovable and great and you got this mistress that you want to hate but you want to like at the same time because outside of the stereotyping you see real people in the act. It was superb job to cast the actresses in the roles. Actress who played the mistress did wonderful job because playing a less-then-smart person takes more-then a genius :)
Great job everybody!

This movie came out last year, and I'd never heard of it, what with Hollywood's obsession with male-driven, blow-em-up movies. This movie is almost completely between two women: a young girl having an affair with a married man, and the man's wife, who finds out about the affair, but then inexplicably becomes friends with the young woman. It is one of the few movies I can think of that handles emotionally complex situations in a realistic manner. Marcia Gay Harden is of course, fantastic. She plays dual emotions flawlessly, such as befriending the mistress while trying to get rid of her. There are men in the movie, but the real powerhouses are the women. LOVED this movie. Wish there were more like it.
