Fast-Paced and Engaging,
By
This review is from: Wereling (Paperback)
When 14 year-old Trey Laporte awakens one morning, he finds his room completely trashed and the window broken open from the inside. Then, a mysterious stranger claiming to be his uncle arrives and is whisked away to his incredibly lavish home. Lucien admits that he is not Trey's uncle, but promised his late parents that he would take care of Trey. Especially now that an evil vampire is after Trey, believing the boy to be his only potential adversary. Because Trey is the last of his kind - a natural (born) werewolf.
Trey is an average teenage boy with an unnatural heritage and the ability to change to wolf form at will. With unbelievable information and finding himself in the most frightening of situations, Trey accepts everything reluctantly with bravery. And having a blooming crush on Lucien's daughter, Trey remains grounded. Feasey's Netherworld creatures extend from vampires and werewolves to demons, sorcerers, djinn, and beyond. Each main character is complex and well-developed, which is not always the case with other young adult fantasy novels. Wereling is a fast-paced, suspense-filled thrill ride, and a treat for urban fantasy fans of all ages. My only complaint is that it was over so quickly. This impressive debut left me craving more. I'm looking forward to the next installment, as the action-packed, climactic ending left off in a minor cliffhanger. And don't miss the handy Netherworld creature glossary in the back of the book for a deeper look into Steve Feasey's fantastic world of all things that go bump in the night.

One for the guys,

This review is from: Wereling (Paperback)
Why I read this: I've been a little into the werewolf books lately and thought I'd give this one a try. It's also a debut novel! :)
Plot: How would you feel if your life was even more messed up than usual? That's how Trey feels when he is pulled out of the group home he was living in and thrown into a world full of vampires, werewolves, and demons. The story is filled with action, learning how to control the wolf inside him, and trying to find a place where he belongs. Characters: Trey seems like your typical troubled guy. He's not a hunk, but he's definitely not dorky and he's so normal - if only he weren't a werewolf. I can see him growing in this book and hope he continues to grow as a character further on in the series. It's hard to relate to Alexa - the female character. She sort of puts herself out there right away, with her faults and I'm not quite used to that. I can't say I like her yet and she's a bit of headcase throughout this book. Relatability: I think this may be more of a guy paranormal book. It has that feel to it - there's none of the gushy stuff us girls like and it has quite a bit of action packed into it. The series definitely has potential and I can't wait to see what happens next. Cover Commentary: It's very powerful - screams Werewolf! Love it. :)

Engaging Storyline!,
This review is from: Wereling (Paperback)
Wereling delivered an engaging storyline with detailed and explosive action. Trey, an orphaned teen, wakes up one day to have his whole life turned upside down. His "uncle" Lucien, who is a vampire, revealed to him that he was a werewolf. A lot to swallow in one day right? Trey didn't surprise me by his reaction of wanting to run away, that would be my initial response as well. I enjoyed his realistic behavior and willingness to deal with the crazy changes. Lucien made it his business to protect and train Trey for the future attacks that might be coming his way. Some of you might be thinking, a vampire training a werewolf? Yes! A refreshing twist to the vampires vs. werewolves battle in most YA books.
Lucien's daughter, Alexa was also an interesting character. She was down to earth and got along well with Trey. I was expecting some type of romance to blossom, however it never happened. Usually, I'd be disappointed since I'm a hopeless romantic, but I was pleasantly fine without it. The book's plot held my attention long enough without realizing that slight detail until the end. The story concluded with me wanting more and yearning to read the sequel! Overall, Steve's writing is simply amusing and colorful. Since this series was released in the UK first, I believe it's a good addition to the US market for supernatural books and look forward to its future releases.

Fast Paced & Cleverly Written,
By Book Sake (Orlando, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wereling (Paperback)
This book captured me in from the first few pages. It's fast paced and cleverly written. Although it is a little bit unoriginal in the actual story format, the characters are great and the story is easy to follow along with. I'm glad that the main character is a werewolf and not a vampire like every other book out there. The villain is really cheesy and predictable that I actually pretty much skimmed the end of the book to get it over with. I really hope that the villain isn't as lame in book 2 or it's going to be one annoying book. I can't wait to read book 2.Reviewed by Kole for Book Sake.

WEREling - 4 Stars,
By L. Reeves "A Life Bound By Books" (US & UK, both I call home) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Wereling (Paperback)
Wereling was an action packed story about a fourteen year old boy who is not only an orphan but just happens to be a werewolf. Of course he doesn't know about his werewolf second nature and as things start to go crazy in his life - in walks someone who claims to be his long lost uncle Lucien, who just happens to have a secret of his own - that he's a vampire.
With werewolves, vampires, demons and various other worldly creatures walking secretly among humans, trouble is bound be lurking around each and every corner. With the help of Lucien, Lucien's daughter Alexa and Lucien's right hand man of sorts - Tom they all come together to try to help Trey understand about what his life means now and help to prepare him for what's possibly in store for him in the future. Trey was honest and down to earth and having to deal with such a huge amount in such a short time, I think he handled him self pretty well. I can say that I really enjoyed both Alexa's and Tom's characters as they each seemed real and true. I found myself smiling and even laughed a couple times over their quirky come backs. And then we have Lucien and his need to protect and teach. It was clear that he took his word seriously when it came to looking after Trey and I was thankful for that not only because of what Trey was going through right then, but for what Trey had been through with the loss of his parents. Throughout the story we learn more about Trey and his parents and just what happened to them to leave him an orphan. I enjoyed the lore that Feasey has included when it comes to his version of the werewolf. In most series books/stories the first can be packed with some much back story that it overshadows the plot(s) and twists and was happy that for me everything fit and came together smoothly. Steve Feasey has written a great beginning to a new-to-the-us series that takes you on a wild and thrilling ride and makes you ready for the next books. Being that I knew I wouldn't be able to wait to see what happens next, I picked up the next 2 books while I was in the UK and will keep an eye out for the 4th book that's released later this summer. GREAT SUPERNATURAL BOOK,
By Melissa (Long Island NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wereling (Paperback)
I loved the book! It was action packed, mysterious and entertaining. It was an easy read and the ending left me craving for more. In most of the books that I read, vampires hated werewolves and this was a fresh new approach to the battle between the two. Trey and Alexa get along well and there was a definite chemistry between them but it never blossomed. Maybe the relationship will grow in the next book in the series. I recommend this to all young adults and the young at heart who love supernatural novels.

Great "idea", dialogue not for me,
By
This review is from: Wereling (Paperback)
WEREling, by Steve Feasey, is a fast-paced adventure surrounding a fourteen-year-old boy and his supernatural genetics. Trey is thrust into a world of paranormal proportions in a matter of hours he is overwhelmed by a whirlwind of information as he discovers that his life is in grave danger.
When I received this book, I was excited to read another werewolf story, but this book let me down. On the positive side, I liked the idea of the story. Feasey really stretched my imagination with his characters and the world they lived in. He created a unique setting that explored a different view on vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings. I liked that Feasey's werewolf was more of old horror movie style versus the more wolf-like werewolves that dominate the market now. Also, there were many instances of action which I enjoyed very much. On the flip side, I really did not enjoy the dialogue. I felt that it was too proper and sometimes it distracted me from the actual story. I felt that some of the conversations would never occur in real life. Characters gave too much information regarding their feelings and thoughts, which I felt was awkward reading. For instance, the spats that Trey and Alexa frequently had were random and resolved too quickly with long-winded apologies that I think a fourteen year old would never come up with on his own. This book was previously released as Changeling, the beginning of a series. This book cleverly set up the series by giving a lot of backstory which I think made me not enjoy it as much. I did not feel there was a resolution at the end of this book, but I would actually not be against reading the next book to see if there is any improvement in the story. I still have mixed feelings about this book even now, so I can honestly say if it interests you I think you should check it out for yourself.

Wereling,
This review is from: Wereling (Paperback)
Trey LaPorte woke one morning to find many things amiss. One, he never remembered going to bed, two, every part of him ached tremendously. Also him room was trashed to the extreme; it looked like a tornado had ripped through his room again and again. And most traumatically his favorite new shoes which he had saved months for were totally shredded. Trey doesn't think his day can get any more strange, when a mysterious man comes to Trey's group home claiming to be his uncle, but Trey knows he doesn't haven't any family not after his grandmother died 3 years ago. This man claims to have answers for him. But Trey must ultimately decide whether or not to trust this man with the strange eyes and get the answers to his questions. What happened to his parents, what secrets this man is hiding, and scariest of all, what he is becoming?
The Good: The opening scene of this novel was overall intriguing. It kept pulling you farther into those first pages. It story had good pace towards the beginning keeping you drawn in by answering long standing questions. The world created by author, Steve Feasey, was unique, mysterious, and compelling. Trey the main character is very relatable and kind. The internal battles he goes through are written beautifully. The minor characters, as well, have well developed personalities. The occasional humor is not out of place. The novel overall was a enjoyable read. The Bad: I felt the middle of this novel drug out a little long. Also the major conflict seemed almost too convenient. Almost like it was thrown in just to have a conflict. But all the same it was action-filled. The ending of this book also laid out the sequel almost too perfectly. It stated the basic story sequence and this killed some suspense. For the rest of this review and others like it visit [...] |
