Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 22-JUN-05, Volume 293, Issue 24, Hulya Iliksu Gozu, MD, Dr Lutfi Kirdar Kartal Education and Research Hospital, Cevizli, Kartal, Istanbul, Turkey -- "The ninth edition of Werner and Ingbar's The Thyroid covers most of the material in previous editions, although differently organized. Some chapters from earlier editions are now combined, for instance, previously separate chapters on radiation physics and biological effects of radioiodines on the human thyroid gland. The previous edition's section (part 2) on laboratory assessment of thyroid function has been shortened and divided among two sections. The former chapter 22, 'Evaluation of Thyroid Nodules by Needle Biopsy,' has been incorporated into the new chapter 73, 'Clinical Evaluation and Management of Solitary Thyroid Nodules.' Infectious thyroiditis has been moved from part 9 to part 4, 'Causes of Thyrotoxicosis.' "In providing information about not only anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology of the thyroid but also pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment, this extensively revised edition of Werner and Ingbar's The Thyroid should interest clinicians and investigators and be of considerable use to clinical residents and research fellows in this field."-Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)
