Chiller or Cold Cut?,
By Len Olly (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wes Cravens Chiller [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Shallow Grave, The Usual Suspects, North By Norhtwest, The Sixth Sense etc...the calibre of such movies cannot be challenged...Chiller though, is an entirely different kettle of fish. However I digress..... One is introduced (to the film) in the cryogenics lab where by sheer fluke a valve bursts and the chamber of our apparent sadistical hero, Miles, begins to thaw. After being alerted to the issue by security staff the lab scientists determine that Miles' body is too thawed and thus ship it off to the local hospital for a world first revival - and this is where the fun starts. Miles is revived but noone realises (until it is almost too late) that he is missing a fundamental part of life - HIS SOUL! This works to his benefit as mother is quite possesive of him as an only child. This ignorance leads to havoc when reassuming his pre death role in the family business, Miles is indirectly responsible for causing the death of a family freind. Is this the beginning of his reign of terror or just a bluff suspenseful moment where one expects a brutal, inane slaying? On the LIVLIER side (pun intended), Miles develops a liking for the odd glass of brandy, blazing fireplaces and his young, maturing female cousin and eventually the movie closes to one of the least satisfying endings I have seen. A classic horror movie, or just a horror movie - this certainly is not. All elements of a classic horror movie (bar a couple of moments) are amiss. Still, if like me, you will watch anything when there is nothing but informercials to watch, I recommend this movie. |
