5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Wes., October 29, 2000
This review is from: Wes Montgomery with Melvin Rhyne (Audio CD)
Jazz guitarist Steve Khan once said that he preferred the guitar tone of Wes in his later Riverside recordings. This compilation of Wes' earlier recordings with Mel Rhyne would probably prove Steve Khan wrong. Jazz guitar purists would find Wes at his purest best in every cut: Round Midnight, Freddie the Freeloader, Moanin', Besame Mucho, etc. Most of these cuts are some of Wes' early, early works before he turned commercial to survive. The recordings are raw, and you can almost feel this young lion in the early sixties eager to share his gift with the jazz world. A gem that should be in every serious jazz guitar affincionado's collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cuts of Wes with an organ trio, December 6, 2002

This review is from: Wes Montgomery with Melvin Rhyne (Audio CD)
This is an excellent compilation of Wes' organ trio work, with songs from Portrait of Wes, A Dynamic New Sound, and Boss Guitar. Many of the recordings are lackluster ballads, but some of them really shine. Freddie Freeloader just sounds right with an organ trio. Two other good tracks are The Trick Bag and The Breeze and I.
