NOT the Ultimate Slide Through Toaster,
By
This review is from: West Bend 6220 Slide Thru Ultimate Toaster (Kitchen)
When I purchased this toaster, after considerable research, in Spetember of 2000, I thought it was the greatest invention since sliced bread. I thought a non-pop-up toaster plus the bagel feature would assure me just the results I wanted. And it did, for 6 months. In March of 2001, the toaster would not slide the product through; I had to force the button up to ejcect the toast and stop the toasting process. We immediately contacted West Bend but were told the warranty had run out and they were sorry but couldn't do anything. Now, in August, the toast not only will not slide through but I have to physically unplug the toaster for it to stop heating. Needless to say, this product is going into the garbage today before it burns our house down. If I could give it less than 1 star, I would

Great toaster!,

After two "conventional" toasters by other manufacturers, trials with unevenly-toasted or barely-toasted bread, stuck bagels, burnt bagel toppings, and limited life spans, we gave this toaster a chance. One-click this toaster -- it's the one to get for the money. We now have evenly toasted bread just at 50% power and bagels that don't have their toppings singed. Plus, the tray that items drop onto when toasting is done is excellent - no tongs necessary to extract stuck items. Get this one.

Toasts fine until...,

This toaster was perfect for the space I had. Too bad it didn't keep working. First the toast started to brown unevenly, then the slide thru feature failed. There is NO way to get it out but to dig it out - or turn it upside down. I only had it for about 4 months before we had to invest in a different toaster.

Great Idea, Big Disappointment,

I was so excited when I discovered this toaster. I thought that it would solve the usual problems that most toasters have: (1) Toasting items getting caught, and (2) Crumbs that leak through the bottom. However, it did not live up to my expectations whatsoever. The 20 or so times that my family and I made toast in this, at least 15 times the toast got stuck, and would not slide through. Heavier items, like breakfast pastries would fall through when you put them, therefore you couldn't toast them at all. The clean up of crumbs was not as "care-free" as I thought it would be. There are a lot of crevices for crumbs to get caught in on the front door, making clean up difficult. Maybe I received a 'lemon' model, but I am not willing to try another one. I went out yesterday and purchased a $25 electronic toaster from a local department store, and am much more satisfied with its performance compared to this expensive model. In short, don't waste your money with this toaster!

did not like toaster,

I knew it was to good to be true.It did not release the toast into the tray when it was done. I also noticed in the manuel, it said to trim the edges of the bread before inserting in toaster. Who has time to do that? Very disappointing product.

Most Versatile Toaster,

This is the first toaster that I have found that you can toast very small slices of French or small diameter Italian bread. You can even refresh biscotti that are made with nuts, and anything similiar, would be almost impossible to "fish out" from a pop-up type toaster. All of the crumbs also fall through so cleaning is simple...just tap on the toaster with the side of your hand and any little crumbs or tiny pieces fall down onto the open door. You can just close the door and tap the door again with your hand and they fall out on to the counter to be wiped away. Presto.

Excellent and Innovative Toaster,

West Bend's designers have done a great job with this innovative toaster. Rather than having the finished toast "pop-up" and out of the toaster, the internal grill-work separates when toasting is complete, allowing the toast to slide softly onto the waiting tray. No more broken pieces of cinnamon raisin bread stuck in the heating coils of the toaster. No more electric plugs pulled out of the wall as one inserts kitchen knives and forks into a standard toaster slot in an attempt to free broken slices of bread. Wonderful. Clean up is a breeze as well.

Superior Toaster,

I cannot understand all these negative reviews, I have had this toaster for 2 or 3 years and find it a delight everytime I use it. I used to hate digging down with a fork to get english muffins out. The product has never once failed in any fashion all these years. And crumb clean up with a sponge beats turning a toaster upside down and shaking it.

I have had this toaster for almost 4 years and I like it. I like having the bagel or english muffin sliding out the bottom instead of trying to pry it out from the top. My sister wants one and I have not been able to find one for her, I would not mind purchasing another one as a back up because realistically I know it won't last forever.

i give this unique TOaSter 4 stars, but im not very picky. as soon as i saw the ad with eggos cascading down the pristine white tray, i was in luv. the machine took me back to my college days when, super fit and carefree, i had time to wait for an english muffin to coast its way down the giant antiquated slide-thru commercial toaster we had in the student cafeteria. the real thing was stainless steel and cud handle about ten slices of bread at a time. unlike the west bend, designed for residential use, i think the pieces mustve made their way down by gravity alone. mebbe the moisture in the untoasted bread helped it adhere to the chamber and get the proper exposure to the hot coils, much the same way as a sweaty bottom makes a kid stick to a park slide. as the bread toasted and dried out, it started a slow decline to the bottom against a gently sloping metal waterfall. its a lot like waiting for your luggage to show up in the airport carousel. half the suspense was vying with the other students for the slice that was yours--hopefully it was the one that was done! the west bend operates on a wire bread basket that springs open at the selected time, but like the real thing, it tends to take somewhat longer to toast than a standard pop-up toaster--particularly for fresh bread--probably cuz the slot is wide to accept thicker items such as BAgeLs and the case is heat-resistent plastic that can get damaged by intense heat. so far im satisfied with its performance. even if it has shortcomings, the sleek designer appearance and professional concept cant be beat. it actually makes toasting fun and rather upper-class. just butta that right on the tray, tah, tah! i predict it will be a collectors item one day.
