I really like this toaster. I've not had it long but I'm very impressed with the quality. It's not cheapy looking or gimmicky.
It operates very well as just a toaster - for bagels, muffins, and bread. The slots are wide and long - big bread slices fit with no problem. You can also heat up a sausage patty but I have not done this yet. I like the Cancel button which pops the toast up and cancels any egg cooking as well. I was looking at a similar egg-sausage-toaster unit but there were several reviews that voiced concern about the quality of the non-stick pan for the egg. Several customers complained that it peeled almost immediately. I took a leap of faith with this one since there were no reviews for it at the time, and I have not been disappointed. The egg dish says to use a non-stick spray even though it appears to be non-stick already. I have been using margarine and it works great. The quality of the non-stick dish looks good to me - I'm not expecting it to peel or degrade unless someone starts using a knife or fork on it! My appliances are white but I could not find this in white. But the stainless steel is beautiful and I don't mind that it doesn't match. The design itself is cool looking. I recommend this product! A poached egg and dry toast nearly every day - and it's easy!

Great Appliance,

This is a great appliance, especially for people on the go. Make your own Egg McMuffin for a fraction of the cost and you don't have to wait in line at the Drive Thru. Its fast and easy and both the muffin and the egg are perfectly cooked everytime. If you don't like the price tag of the stainless, you can buy the black finish for $20 less.

Great Bagel and Egg Sandwich,

Toaster is easy to use and makes a great morning sandwich. I found it easily cleans up as well. Makes toast, english muffin, or bagel. Eggs are cooked perfectly. Precooked ham or sausage is also heated as well. This is a healthy quick breakfast.

After one year, very happy. Use parchment in lieu of Pam.,

This is a great device, we use it about 2-3 times per week for hot egg and English muffin sandwiches. It's a nice toaster, too, even when not making eggs. The slots are wide and it toasts evenly.
Here is a tip that makes the device quicker, easier and cleaner to use: Instead of spraying pam into the egg holder, you can cut a small square of parchment paper. Tuck the paper inside and crack the egg right into it. When it's done, you can lift two corners of the parchment and the egg comes right out. The parchment is non stick and fat free. Toss the little square and you're done. No little dish to wash. I keep a small stack of pre-cut parchment next to the toaster. Here's a link for the parchment: Beyond Gourmet Unbleached Parchment Paper, 71-Square Foot Roll

toaster/egg maker,
By
This review is from: West Bend 78822 Egg and Muffin Toaster Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This is a great toaster/egg maker. I owned a black one of the same model, but the egg maker stopped working after about 2 years. I went with the stainless steel because I am hoping in will last longer than my first one. I love the egg feature, it really works great. There's even a warmer that is included that you can use to heat meat that is already cooked. You can make your own muffin with egg, chese, and canadian bacon! The only thing I would say to be cautious about is the plate that you put the egg in. The handle is not very strong and it broke within the first 2 months on my black toaster. It was still usable, but it was a little more inconvenient. I don't know if it is possible to reorder just the egg plate, but if you can that would be a good idea to keep on hand for when the handle decides to break. Otherwise, it's a great toaster, and I wouldn't go with any other toaster without the egg-making feature.

This toaster works well. And it looks nice. But the jury is still out on the egg feature. We have tried soft boiling, hard boiling, and poaching a number of times, and have not figured out how to get a soft egg. The amount of water you add dictates the length of cooking. The hard boiling is fine. The soft boiled and poached eggs came out hard, even with the lowest amount of water added. We have been slowly lowering the amount of water to try to get a softer cooked egg. But we have not had much success yet. The eggs are good, just cooked hard. Also, you need to start your toast later than the egg or the toast will be cold when the egg is done.

This thing is pretty awesome. I work in the world of manufacturing/importing and I'd been seeing these things at housewares shows for a while. When they first came about I thought it was the perfect item. Oddly enough I didn't seem to think about them when I was shoppping.
I did a lot of research as usual and settled on the stainless steel version to match my kitchen. After reading the reviews I was worried about the burning plastic smell that everyone was talking about. It was noticeable for the first few times running it but has gone unnoticed since so don't let that worry you. my first breakfast was 2 egg whites on an english muffin. Woke up, cracked 2 eggs, threw english muffins in and hit go. After my shower I came down to a fantastic hot meal that I could grab and go. Since then I've added bacon, salsa, cheese, all sorts of things to make these more tasty. My girlfriend uses it for boiled eggs and says it work brilliantly every time. Cleaning is relatively easy but it's best to use some cooking spray to make your life easier. The "meat" tray works great but it's not making crispy bacon, just moist soggy, bacon which is fine by me as the taste is most important. The bottom water tray seems to get a little random debris down there as well as some rust or rust looking stuff. It's not too hard to wipe out but it needs to be done every few times of use. Overall this thing is great for me as I'm always on the go. Of course you can do all of these things seperately and craft a fine breakfast sammie....but it's a lot cooler and easier to do it all in one.

I had done extensive reading of reviews before I purchased this toaster. I think most of the reviews were right on target. The plastic parts are inexpensive, the metal parts are great. I had estimated (based on previous reviews) that the toaster would last about 2 years. That is fine with me, I like to swap out appliances every few years anyway. Like others before me I have found that cooking an egg (med/hard) either poached or in the shell, and a piece of toast and having them both warm and ready at the same time is impossible. The eggs are hot and ready and the toast is tepid. However, I really like the toaster/egg combination. I like it well enough even with its flaws to recommend it as a purchase and I would purchase this same item again (in a few years).

Nice Toaster but Takes Getting Used To,

First thing about this toaster is that it comes with a coating of something so the first time you turn it on it smells like a refinery in the distance. I ran it through several cycles and what ever it was burned off.
Second thing, it has different heating elements than I was used to. It takes a little longer to toast and the bread is cooked through a little more than with my old toaster. The egg poacher is great, I mean great. It takes a bit of experimentation to get the eggs exactly the way you like them but once you have them dialed in they are perfect every time.

A Star for the Coolness Factor,
By
This review is from: West Bend 78822 Egg and Muffin Toaster Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This baby is fun to use, looks great on the counter, and does a pretty good job with its main functions - toasting and poaching. The poacher works exactly as per instructions. After several tries you're able to calibrate it (with the amount of water) for the exact way you like your egg. The toaster works fine, although - like every other toaster I've ever had - it does not toast evenly on both sides of the bread. One side is lighter; one side is darker. There are probably toasters out there that manage to toast perfectly - maybe at least for a month or two! - but I'm not inclined to spend gobs of money on a toaster. Speaking of money, I think Amazon needs to lower its price on this item. I ended up buying this from my local discount store because the price was the same as Amazon's and I knew it would be easier and cheaper (no shipping) to return locally in the event that I did not like the toaster or the toasting/poaching performance declined rapidly in the first month or two.
June 2011 update - Been using this for over a year and it's still working great. The toaster still toasts a bit unevenly, but I can't imagine an easier way to poach an egg. If you love a poached egg for breakfast, this unit might be for you! |
