5.0 out of 5 stars Does the job!
When I received this item I was a little concerned about its size. It looked small compared to the old Rival one-piece crockpot it was replacing. I had planned on purchasing the West Bend 6-quart cooker but went with this 5-quart when it showed up on Friday sale. Today I cooked a whole slab of ribs in it and there was room to spare. The ribs cooked to perfection in...

1.0 out of 5 stars Returned Item - heating element not sufficient
I have a 35 year old West-Bend slow cooker that works better than this one, except the teflon finish is quite worn. Tried to cook a roast and a stew in this new cooker, and after 10 hours it was not quite done. Not happy with product, feel it may have been defective. Heat was not evenly distributed; the pan itself seemed very thin and not of good quality (like an...

The ribs cooked to perfection in *exactly* the time listed in the instruction manual on setting #3. Cleanup took all of about 15 seconds. Storage was a breeze - hey, I think I'm going to LIKE the smaller size! I think the unit could cook an entree for maybe 8-10 people. Be aware that the power cord is short and, because the pan is metal, the unit gets hot on the outside. I personally like shorter power cords and also was looking for a metal pan that I could brown meat in and take straight to the slow cooker base, so those are good for me but may not be for you. Happy cooking!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very versatile, February 23, 2005
This review is from: West Bend 84765 5-Quart Oblong Slow Cooker with Tote, White (Kitchen)
I asked for this as a gift - planning on using it in our RV - kind of an alternate for the old crockpot. I tried it out at home and I may just have to get a second one to leave in the RV! The pot is spacious for it's size. The recipes give guidelines for faster and slower cooking speeds. I tried a pot roast and it cooked perfectly in the specified time. I have also used it for slow-cooked spaghetti sauce. I like the fact that you can remove it from the base and refrigerate it. Much more useful than a crockpot. It goes back on the stove for warm up, and the tote allows you to take it for potluck suppers. I have also found the base to be a perfect size to hold a couple of ceramic dishes with hot dips for a party. The glass cover can be used for a serving dish and cleanup of everything is a snap.

This slow cooker lets you cook all day on 3 (low) without overcooking or burning the food like some popular crockery cookers will do. The meat is very tender, but doesn't disintegrate. Being able to pre-brown the meat and onions in the same pan saves some clean up, and adds a little more sophisticated flavor to the dish. Leftovers can be saved in the pan (the plastic cover is a nice touch) and reheated right on the stove, which is very convenient.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love It!, February 3, 2006

I thought all slow cookers had a heavy huge stone insert, so I was a little concerned when this one did not. Because it has no insert, it also looked really small at first. I LOVE this slow cooker! It's compact but it holds a lot of food, it's lightweight, very sturdy, versatile and cleans up quick. I would recommend this without reservation.

We bought a rival slow cooker, and it was the worst ever! shopped online with amazon, and read the reviews for west bend, and ordered it. It's the best we ever had. great product. The size will fool you. buy it you will love it.

Purchased this slow cooker after my other one bit the dust. This is an EXCELLENT slow cooker--it looks small in the package, but holds more than you think. The teflon coating is perfect for easy cleanup--aluminum container is light to pick up and move (with oven mits). I've not used the bottom as a griddle, but purchased this as a true slow cooker. I've done chili, soups, meats and am very pleased. Watch the temperature controls until you get used to them. The tote is a bonus-easy to store that way and keep it unscratched, but I've not transported anything. I've tried several slow cookers and this is simply the best design and performance. Light, easy to clean, fairly large (mid-size roasts) capacity. You shouldn't be disappointed if you buy one.

After trying (and returning) several slow cookers which both overcooked the food on low heat, I purchased this West Bend 84765 model. Put together some potatoes, chicken thighs, broccoli, carrots, etc. Left on LOW for 10 hours....vegetables were juicy and flavorsome...chicken was fall-off-the-bone moist. This is the way a slow cooker should cook....everything should turn out tender and juicy. Thanks for all of your opinions on this site, which convinced me to purchase this wonderful slow cooker!

5.0 out of 5 stars What could be easier?, March 3, 2006
This review is from: West Bend 84765 5-Quart Oblong Slow Cooker with Tote, White (Kitchen)
I've only used this slow cooker a couple of times thus far, but it really worked well. I also like the facts that
1. it includes a griddle,
2. it be used on the cooktop for browning meat,
3. it includes a totebag--for ease of transport.

In addition, it's very lightweight and easy to clean.

So far, I'm really happy it.

This slow cooker does it all. Stove top and slow cooker, at home or on the go. The carrying case really came in handy at the office Christmas party. It holds the heating unit and the pot too - all in a neat little carry-all. This two part slow cooker is a neat idea. Up until now every slow cooker I've owned has been a single unit with removeable stoneware insert. I really like the design of this. You can reheat leftovers right on the stove. Versatiltiy, convenience, quality and great price make this purchase a winner.
