Editorial Reviews

Review

Cramer turns his multi-hued baritone to wonder-filled traditional folk ballads, lilting Celtic airs, Canadian fishing songs and brawling-voiced a capella sea chanteys. The seafaring tunes harken to a bygone era, making the listener yearn to be anywhere but on a couch in a modern-day living room. He is one of the leading lights in the Pacific Northwest folk scene! -- Arizona Daily Star -- Tucson, AZ

It's impossible to listen to West By Northwest without tapping a toe, raising a frothy mug, and singing along! This delightful collection carries you along with the same gentle yet rugged sureness as the sailing ships, covered wagons, and big rigs that Hank is singing about. His powerful baritone is as comfortable booming out "Santy Anno" as it is caressing "Sweet Wyoming Home". "Kind of Like You" is written with a fresh, innocent sincerity that could make even the most cynical among us a starry-eyed dreamer again. The only thing better than this recording is to catch Hank Cramer live! -- Soundwave Music News-- Olympia WA

One of the West Coast's favorite folksingers, well known for his booming bass voice and wide repertoire! -- Times Mirror -- Victoria, BC

About the Artist

Hank Cramer is a traveling folksinger well-known throughout the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest. Armed with a booming bass voice and a vintage Martin guitar, he holds audiences spellbound with his wide repertoire of sea-shanties, miners' tunes, soldier ballads, and songs of the open road. He comes by the songs honestly: at various stages in his life he has worked as an underground miner, served as a paratrooper in the elite "Green Berets", been resident bard at an Irish pub, and shipped as the shanty-man aboard a square-rigger. He has two solo CD's in print, appears as a guest artist on CD's by 10 other performers, and recorded the sound-track to a Discovery Channel movie. Hank resides on a ranch in Washington's Methow Valley when he's not on the road.

I have had this CD by Hank Cramer for a number of months. The selections on this CD are very good. Hanks interpetion of the songs by other writers, makes you feel that they are his own songs. I especially like "Touch a Name". Hanks father's name is on the Wall. This adds a special feeling to his rendition of this number. If you have ever been to the "Wall", you will no what I mean. He has a way with "Sea Shanties" that puts you right on the end of the rope. Listening to his rich voice booming out on this CD, you can't help but tap you foot and sing along.

I own all of Hank Cramer's albums and have heard him sing in person several different times.

I believe the most amazing thing about his singing is how well he enunciates each and every syllable. There is no question what the words are when Hank sings.

Buy an album (or two or three or four) and give him a chance to entertain you. I don't think you will be sorry. If you go to his website at [...] you can listen to a few of his songs. If you are really lucky, perhaps you too will get to hear him sing in person someday.
