2.0 out of 5 stars The Great Lakes Avengers are one of the worst groups of superheroes ever created, June 11, 2011
This review is from: The West Coast Avengers #46 : Franchise (First Appearance of the Great Lakes Avengers - Marvel Comics) (Paperback)
Until I spotted this comic on the rack at my favorite used bookstore I had never heard of the Great Lakes Avengers. Upon reading this story, I did not consider it a great loss; this group of superheroes consists largely of poor imitations of other creatures with super powers that have appeared in Marvel stories.
The worst is Flatman, a Reed Richards rip-off with a large F on his chest and a blue uniform. Flatman is capable of stretching linearly, although he is essentially a two-dimensional ribbon. Big Bertha is a female imitation of the evil mutant "The Blob" that has battled the X-Men so many times. When shot, her body absorbs the bullets and then fires them back out at her attackers. Her breasts could be considered deadly weapons if she were to spin fast enough. Dinah Soar is a pink creature that can fly but seems unable to talk, Doorman is a black apparition and the leader is Mr. Immortal, a young man with unruly yellow hair and an attitude. His power is that he cannot be killed and his personality is similar to that of Johnny Storm.
Some ideas for superheroes work and others do not; in studying the history of the Great Lakes Avengers you quickly learn that it was a short one. Reading this story, it is easy to see why.
