From the Director
Joan Jones: Instructor
Joan's career as a mountain bike instructor began in 1993 and two years later she founded the West Coast School of Mountain Biking (WCSMB). As Director of the school, Joan accumulated thousands of hours of teaching experience, trained instructors and designed programs for the 4000-plus riders who have participated in WCSMB camps and clinics. Joan has a clear and straightforward approach to teaching and is an inspiration to recreational riders and future leaders in the mountain bike industry.
Joan competed for years as an elite cross-country and downhill racer and continues to push her limits in trials, freeriding and most recently track riding. She is a Level 3 NCCP Cycling Coach, a writer for Pedal Magazine, the Executive Producer of the instructional video West Coast Style  Mountain Biking and an Instructor with the Capilano College Wilderness Leadership Program and Capilano College Mountain Bike Operations Program.
In 2001, Joan teamed up with Daamiann Skelton to start Canadian Mountainbike Instructor Certification (CMIC) Â a business for training mountain bike ride leaders, guides and instructors. Joan and Daamiann pooled their experience to develop the CMIC curriculum for Ride Leader, Guide and Instructor training, including material on skill analysis, teaching methodology, guiding skills, leadership and emergency action planning.
In 2004, Joan and the other members of the West Coast Style production team produced the second in the West Coast Style series, West Coast Style  Freeride Fundamentals. The scripting and instructional content of this DVD are the work of Joan and Daamiann Skelton. Now that the DVD is complete Joan is either riding a bike or at work in the office overseeing DVD marketing, writing for this web site and related projects or building a vision for a third DVD in the West Coast Style series.
Daamian Skelton: Instructor Daamiann started out in 1992 as a ski bum in Whistler BC, and upon discovering the thrills of mountain biking, worked as a mountain bike guide on Whistler Mountain for three seasons, teaching and guiding guests from across the globe. This lead to racing cross-country until two years later, crossing over to downhill, she found herself winning races across Canada and taking the 1997 National Series. In her professional career she raced internationally, representing Canada at four World Mountain Bike Championships - placing 10th in 1998 and twice winning the title of Canadian National Downhill Mountain Bike Champion.
Daamiann has an easygoing nature, and is well known in the mountain biking community having featured in numerous magazines, television programs and videos, including Kranked III.
Daamiann's natural ability for skill analysis and teaching has seen her team up with Joan Jones in 2001 to create and develop CMIC (Canadian Mountainbike Instructor Certification). She is also a director of the West Coast School of Mountain Biking (WCSMB) and, as an instructor in demand; she teaches skill clinics with several other businesses in British Columbia including Spokeswomen, Private Clinics in Whistler Bike Park, Rossland Mountain Adventures, DevineRIDE, Endless Biking, WORCA (Whistler Off Road Cycling Association), Capilano College Wilderness Leadership Program and Capilano College Mountain Bike Operations Program. She is also a level one NCCP coach, and well versed in 1st Aid, having two years experience working as a pro patroller on Blackcomb Mtn.
In 2004, Daamiann teamed up with the West Coast Style crew to film West Coast Style  Freeride Fundamentals. Her years of experience were integral in the progression and technical materials presented in the instructional DVD, and many of her teaching points and riding demonstrations can be viewed on the DVD.
Daamiann is not just a mountain biker. During the winter months she enjoys telemark skiing, snowshoeing and playing ice hockey. In the summer she plays around with some trials skills, loves surfing, is dabbling in soccer and enjoys a great book by the lake. Most of this is done with her dog, Kootnee.
