Refreshing pop music,

Ok, so the dude sounds a bit like elliott smith. As an EXTREME Elliott Smith fan, I don't think thats so bad. I do agree that before one buys this they should consider buying every elliott smith record out there. However, this stil has the guys own unique style..its the same with the band Earlimart (who is also accused of an "awful elliott smith rip off"). In my opinion, the more stuff that comes out that makes me remember elliott...the bettter, because we was one of the best pop songwriters of all time...and anyone that has tried to write something as gorgeous as some of his tunes...can vouch for that.

Elliott Smith redux?,

Tough one for me to review. I like about half the songs. The majority of those sound eerily similar to Elliott Smith. So, if you like that sound, your best $ is spent on Figure 8, or XO (my personal fave). Oh, one other thing; has anyone ever heard a song that was decent based on an author or poets words? Song 10 on this release has words by Robert Louis Stevenson, and it is not a good song. Those ideas never seem to work.

The summer soundtrack,

The versatility of "West of Lincoln" is really great. I can imagine listening to this CD on a long drive to the beach on a bright, sunny day, or perhaps having it played while camping out or having a bonfire. This is definitely something you'd like to play throughout the summer. I'd attribute this to the laidback, mellow, yet dirverse sound of Blue-Eyed Son. He has a very sweet, ethereal voice that immediately lends itself to the background. Not to say that it's weak or lacks character, of course. The standout tracks would be: 1. Step Away from the Cliff - an excellent track to start off the CD with, as it draws itself immediately to the listener. It is a very upbeat track with a contemporary country/folk feel. The only fault I see with Blue-Eyed Son's album is that it lacks focus and/or excitement towards the end of the CD. I would have liked to hear more tracks akin to "Self-Fulfillig Prophecy" near the end. But I'm just nit-picking. A great summer soundtrack for this year, you should definitely give this a listen.

Andrew Heilprin is SUCH a fantastic singer/songwriter. Amazing voice combined with awesome music and lyrics. Every song has a different vibe so there's no boredom from monotony like I experience with a lot of albums and the production quality is top notch. My husband and I feel lucky to have discovered this gem (thru KCRW) early on. We get to listen to him NOW before waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. This is the kind of CD you want to buy multiples of - so you can listen to it at home, in the car, and at work. An instant classic for our collection. It really is THAT good.
