4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Native American Samples
I was pleased with the Native American tracks that were offered. Very authentic and moving, especially 'Kiowa Ruffle Dance' and 'Morning Prayer'. I was not pleased with only 57 minutes of music from a 720 minute film. I was anticipating a CD comparable with 'How the West Was Lost Vol 1 & Vol 2'. Unfortunately, this is not the case. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good Western Music
The music on this CD is really great. The era from which this music was is a lost era of music. Thanks for getting this together

I was not pleased with only 57 minutes of music from a 720 minute film. I was anticipating a CD comparable with 'How the West Was Lost Vol 1 & Vol 2'. Unfortunately, this is not the case. If the purpose was to provide a teasing cross section balanced between Native American and others, then I guess the producer accomplished his goal. Unlike 'How the West Was Lost' the music of which stands alone, I would only recommend this recording to those who view the film.

I bought this cd two years ago for a history project and I was really surprised how much I loved the music. This cd gave me the desire to learn to play the banjo. I have really gotten my money out of this cd and it will continue being one of my favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good western tunes here!, July 30, 2005

This review is from: The West (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after seeing the odd episode or two of the original TV documentary by Ken Burns. I really liked the western style folk tunes (I think that's what you would call them?) that were featured as background music. The tunes I enjoy are those featuring Banjo, Guitar, Fiddle etc. such as Colorado Trail, Sweet Nebraska Land, Git Along Little Doggies and Across The Wide Missouri. This CD also includes a number of Native American tunes which personally don't interest me a great deal as most of them sound the same, not to be disrespectful. (I know what that's like though, I play old time banjo and most people tell me the tunes I play all sound the same!). There are also a couple of historical recordings such as The Old Chisolm Trail and California Humbug. Anyway the tunes I bought the CD for a great but there's only half a dozen or so of those. The rest I guess is a slice of 1800's western United States if that's what you're interested in.
